The Ditching Marquis Thread
#1
Figure he's gonna be a prominent part of our rumors for the rest of the off-season, might as well have his own thread.

There is a recent Rockies article that says they're still very interested, and would possibly trade us David Patton - the guy we took in the Rule V draft (technically, the Reds took him and sent him to us). The trade seems weird, because we already have the dude, but by "trading" him to us, we wouldn't have to keep him on the 25-man all year to "keep" him.

That said, Patton doesn't strike me as a particularly good return for Marquis unless the Rockies are taking ALL of his salary. Even then, I still feel like Marquis, in this market, only signed for one year, should be attractive to a few teams.

Patton looks kind of sucky.
If Angelo had picked McClellin, I would have been expecting to hear by training camp that kid has stage 4 cancer, is actually 5'2" 142 lbs, is a chick who played in a 7 - 0 defensive scheme who only rotated in on downs which were 3 and 34 yds + so is not expecting to play a down in the NFL until the sex change is complete and she puts on another 100 lbs. + but this is Emery's first pick so he'll get a pass with a bit of questioning. - 1060Ivy

I still feel there is a better than 50% chance that Marquis is still a Cub opening day, but we'll see. If we are simply trading him to make room for another player then fine, but if we're shedding payroll for economic reasons, then I will be unhappy. And we'd better not be paying more that 2-3 mil under any circumstance unless we're getting something decent in return.

We should only be trading Marquis if we're getting another starting pitcher.

Bingo... At the moment, we have no one to replace him.

We need 6 starting pitchers with Harden. Marquis is better than all of our other options.

I was under the assumption we could afford Bradley without dealing Marquis. It was getting him and Peavy that required a Marquis trade.

I really like Marshall, I do, but he has never pitched more than 125 innings in his pro career. I don't want to trust him unless we have a backup plan, which we don't. Keep Marquis.

Or someone like Randy Johnson (which doesn't make a ton of sense to me).

A herd of buffalo can move only as fast as the slowest buffalo. When the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members.

In much the same way the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, we all know, kills brain cells, but naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers.

I was really hoping that he'd sign somewhere in the AL instead. I know we don't face the Giants much, but his 1-2 starts against us are guaranteed losses.

And it's not like facing Lincecum and Cain is better. Man, if they could get any, and I mean any offense, they could be very good. They'd at least be a threat in that division.

Imagine if they got Manny. I think they'd be the favorites in the West, but that's not saying much.
