Yep. Pretty much it's Marquis or Peavy.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Or someone like Randy Johnson (which doesn't make a ton of sense to me).
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
He signed with the Giants today.

I can buy the argument about needing 6 starters with Harden and can almost buy the argument about Marshall not having ever thrown very many innings but to say Marshall isn't good enough to replace Marquis (if that's what you're saying) is pretty silly.

I think if we move Marquis, between Marshall, Samaradzija and Gaudin, we'll be fine.

Just saw on the bottom line that we're close to sending Marquis to the Rockies for Luis Vizcaino.

Apparently it's Steve Phillips reporting it:
<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->According to ESPN's Steve Phillips, the Cubs and Rockies are close to a swap of starter Jason Marquis for reliever Luis Vizcaino (saw it scroll across the screen on ESPN2). Marquis is set to earn $9.875MM in '09, while Vizcaino will make $3.5MM plus a $4MM option for 2010 with a $500K buyout.

Marquis, 30, tossed 167 innings of 4.53 ball in 2008. He did roughly the same in '07. Vizcaino, 34, posted a 5.28 ERA in 46 innings. He dealt with a strained shoulder and later expressed concerns that he didn't pitch enough. His velocity was up from '07 and he whiffed more than a batter per inning, but he was done in by walks and home runs. Vizcaino added a DUI to his resume in October.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Well I assume that means the Rockies would take Marquis' contract, and we'd deal with Vizcaino's now.

Sounds like a salary dump. Would this be to clear room for Jake Penis, perchance?

That's fine with me if they're taking his whole contract.

I mean they'd have to be right? But I read yesterday from Troy Renck here that he didn't know if the Rockies could even take on ANY part of Marquis' contract. I can't see us just rather having Vizcaino than Marquis with how the team's constructed. We wouldn't just give him away. I know they're gonna say, "Vizcaino's velocity is up and we think he can be a great late inning guy again like he was for years", but I'm not gonna buy that.

From Roto....

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->ESPN's Steve Phillips is reporting that the Cubs are close to sending Jason Marquis to the Rockies for Luis Vizcaino.
Some cash almost certainly would be involved as well. This is a lot more about the Cubs wanting to dump Marquis than it is any desire for Vizcaino. With an open rotation spot, they could well enter the mix for Derek Lowe or Randy Wolf. It seems unlikely that the Jake Peavy talks will be revisited.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

If that is the case, keep him. I'd be down for Lowe, but kill me if we get Wolf.

Why the hell would we go after Randy Wolf? I would have kept Marquis in that scenario. Derek Lowe is an upgrade, not exactly one of my favorite picks but wouldn't complain if we got him to sub for Marquis.

This is definitely a pure salary dump. If we put Vizcaino to heavy use foolish of us. But if he is just a filler I really could care less about the guy. Hopefully we will use that saved $ for something worthwhile.
