Gaetti? Really? Gaetti hadn't had a good season in 10 years (1995 being an outlier) before we picked him up mid-season. He was also 39 when we got him and 40 when we signed him to a 1-year deal.
Plus, we still had DeRosa under contract for relatively cheap when we traded him.
I don't see the comparison.

Heilman said on one hand he is kind of sad he was not able to pitch for the Mariners but on the other hand he is more excited to be with the Cubs. He told Kaplan he knows what it is like to be a Cubs fan and has an idea of what it will be like pitching for the Cubs.
Heilman grew up watching the Cubs on WGN and listening to Pat Hughes and Ron Santo on the radio
The first big league game Heilman saw in person was at Wrigley
Heilman wants to be a starter and was told to report to camp prepared to be a starter
Heilman said it is up to the manager and coaching staff to determine his role. He is excited that he will have a chance to earn the job in Spring Training.
Heilman reiterated to Kaplan that he is very familiar with the Cubs tradition. He said hopefully the Cubs will be able to figure out the missing pieces from the last two years and get to the World Series.

That's not why we lost the series, but to completely ignore the fact that the Dodgers never once even got a left hander up in the bullpen would be foolish.
The Cubs still won 97 games, but having Fuk completely collapse, and Edmonds revert to form makes things far too easy for the other team, tactically. If having Bradley in the lineup forces a right handed pitcher to come out of the game an inning before he normally would, that could help immensely.

I just feel that other than the Dempster and Bradley signings, Hendry has made a bunch of lateral or negative moves. I have been a big Hendry fan, but let's face it, he is an average gm when it comes to putting together a team. He's great at getting people to stay in Chicago for lower prices, but that usually comes with the cost of no trade clauses which shackle us in terms of flexibility. Hendry's greatest strength, and what makes him a slightly above average gm, is his ability to inspire loyalty in players because he's a class act. And that's not to be discounted.
But if he had no master plan, he should have left well enough alone this offseason. I have been considering the possibility that Lou is behind some of this shit, but the buck stops with Hendry.

me too. there's no doubt in my mind.
as for hendry. the lateral or negative moves aren't significant enough to really hurt this team and the positive moves are really gonna help.
i like the team the way it's constituted. my only real concern is injuries. if we can stay relatively healthy or at the very least not all get injured at the same time, we'll be just fine in 2009.
