Every year, Hendry obsesses about something. This year, it's "handedness." Somehow he's convinced that we lost the series to the Dodgers because we didn't have any LH hitters.

Yep, Lou started harping about this after the playoffs. This has been his obsession for the better part of 2 offseasons though. I remember them talking about adding LH bats in 2007, but all we ended up adding was Fuk. Let's hope this works out better this time.

Is age 33 to age 34 some sort of magical transition? You could say this for any player, then. "Hendry fucked up when he signed Bradley because he paid for the 30 year old Bradley...but he'll turn 31 this year." It's just a weird line of thinking. Should we trade every player every year because they'll be a year older?

That's not why we lost the series, but to completely ignore the fact that the Dodgers never once even got a left hander up in the bullpen would be foolish.

The Cubs still won 97 games, but having Fuk completely collapse, and Edmonds revert to form makes things far too easy for the other team, tactically. If having Bradley in the lineup forces a right handed pitcher to come out of the game an inning before he normally would, that could help immensely.

You are completely twisting the idea of a career year. If DeRosa had spent the better part of the decade putting up 118+ OPS, then it would be asinine to suggest he will fall off the table when he turns 34. That's NOT what happened. What DID happen is between 32 and 33, he essentially upped his production by 20 percent. Has he established a new level? Possibly. Is it a slam dunk? Of course not.

The fact is, people would be doing a LOT less bitching if we traded a guy who hit 10 home runs instead of 20, and who had an OPS 67 points lower than last year. That is the year he had in 2007. Admirable, but not a "he is the MVP of the team" type of season. And MUCH closer to his career numbers than the ones he put up in 2008.

Hendry builds team the way the manager wants it to be built, he did it with Baker and he's doing it now. He got rid of the guys Lou didn't like (Marquis, Cedeno, and Pie) and added the left handed bats he's wanted since he got here. I don't see it really making a difference in the grand scheme of things, but this team is built the way Lou wants it, not necessarily the way we think it should be built.

Good analysis, Rube.
I honestly have been thinking the exact same thing. No,<i> I'm</i> not thrilled that Jim bends over backwards to give each skipper precisely what he desires. But I bet the manager <i>loves</i> it.
And Lou's gonna play who he wants to play, that's a certainty. So Jim decided to grant him his wishes, which included cleaning house of non-Lou guys.
In some ways, it makes a lot of sense.
I just hope it works.

There's nothing better than to realize that the good things about youth don't end with youth itself. It's a matter of realizing that life can be renewed every day you get out of bed without baggage. It's tough to get there, but it's better than the dark thoughts. -Lance

Agreed. How quickly people forget Gary Gaetti... and every other veteran who the Cubs overpaid after an abnormally strong season.

But that's a lot of ifs.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
And if Derosa, at age 34, regresses from a career best year then we might miss him a little less. That's not a very big if.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

As Dirk said, we are definitely going to miss the 2008 version of Mark DeRosa. It remains to be seen if the 2009 version of DeRosa will be AS missed.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Even if he is the 06-07 DeRosa its still a big drop off and we still gave him away for shit, simply to get left-handed. Had we traded him for something we could use, it would be easier to swallow, but we didn't, we got 3 mediocre prospects.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Fella gets it.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Possibly, but Fella is arguing an entirely different point than you and I were arguing. "Did we get enough back for DeRosa" is a different argument from "Will we miss DeRosa".
I wish that I believed in Fate. I wish I didn't sleep so late. I used to be carried in the arms of cheerleaders.
