me too. there's no doubt in my mind.
as for hendry. the lateral or negative moves aren't significant enough to really hurt this team and the positive moves are really gonna help.
i like the team the way it's constituted. my only real concern is injuries. if we can stay relatively healthy or at the very least not all get injured at the same time, we'll be just fine in 2009.

What were the positive moves? Bradley? Considering how much time he'll play, he'll basically replace Edmond's production for the 2 or 3 months we had him. Gregg? He's a small step back from Wood. Miles? He's a huge step back from DeRosa. Bako is a step back from Blanco (not that a backup catcher is going to make a huge difference, but still). I have no idea who our #5 starter will be, but maybe they'll be better than Marquis. Who really knows? Probably a lateral move, at best.
We'll probably still win the division, but that isn't because we improved. It's because the NL Central is going to blow.
The problem is that Hendry was incredibly active this offseason -- he probably made more moves than any GM in baseball so far, but where has it gotten us? He's just wasted resources, as far as I can tell.
The DeRosa deal was really the kicker. We got dogshit in return for him, and look how valuable he would be the way this team is constructed. He could play 2B when we're facing a LHP. He could play RF when Bradley hurts his vagina. He could play 3B when Ramirez goes down. He could spell Lee at 1B to give him a day off here and there. Without having a starting spot on the team, he could play in 100+ games, easily. Instead, we have Aaron Miles.
And don't tell me it was some sort of salary issue. DeRosa will be making $5.5M this season. That's an absolute bargain. Miles is getting paid $2.2M this year and we have him for $2.7M in 2010 for some reason. Did we really need to give Aaron fucking Miles a two-year deal to land him? In this market, was Miles worth $5M over two years? The answer to both questions is a big, fat no.
We should still win somewhere between 88 and 92 games, IMO. But that doesn't mean Hendry had a good offseason.

Butcher and I have always agreed about 95% on all "baseball/Chicago Cubs" topics. Which is why I've always considered it a bit mystifying that he's the most popular guy on the board, and I'm about the least popular.
Maybe it's because he's a cool guy, and I'm a dick.
But that 95% has been upped to 100% with this post of his.
It's perfectly written and completely accurate.

1. edmonds was hot the first couple months he was here and then he was a non-factor. if bradley only plays 85 games this year he will not only eclipse edmonds, he will orbit him and eclipse him a second time. mark my words.
2. kb, the reason you get so much more shit than butchie is because you're so over the top, you completely overhype every point you make, you completely ignore anyone who proves you wrong, you say the same things over and over and over til it drives people crazy, you're so over the top, and you over hype every point you make.
3. having said that, you make this site tick, so keep on doing what you do, because as insane as it is, it's still wildly entertaining.

No matter how much Edmonds sucked after the first two months, his overall production as a Cub was very good. .369 OBP compared to Bradley's .370 lifetime and .568 slugging compared to Bradley's .563 career best.
I like you guys a lot.

Those numbers are fine, but Edmonds was wildly inconsistent while here. I know this is a huge assumption, but if Bradley can just play 100-120 games here, I think he will be much more consistent than Jimmy Baseball, and he should provide a lot more to the team in terms of versatility than just power and BB, which essentially is all that was/is left of his game. I'm not saying Bradley is a huge upgrade, but I think we are slightly better off in RF/CF than we were last season. The IF, on the other hand, is where I think we downgraded the most, but we're essentially the same team, to slightly weaker when you look at everything in aggregate.

Yeah, Kabes is one of my favorite people here. We disagree all the time but it's just baseball arguments, I enjoy it. I'd love to get drunk with him. He cracks me up.

A herd of buffalo can move only as fast as the slowest buffalo. When the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members.
In much the same way the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, we all know, kills brain cells, but naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers.

QUOTE It's up to the Cubs. Many baseball observers have noted Heilman's delivery--specifically, his high elbow inversion and near-sidearm angle--as major handicaps to becoming a successful innings-eater.
Heilman, at the very least, can be an adequate swingman. He's got the change of scenery he wanted, now we'll see about the results. WHIFF says his 2009 campaign is a real good bet to look more like his 2005-2007 seasons than the one he had in '08.

I'm 100% fine with this. I'm just glad there's an actual plan in place that isn't, "Let's load up on retreads and hope we get lucky." I'm a little tired of that plan.

KB ain't going nowhere, I wouldn't allow it . . . however, if he could stop completely blowing everything out of proportion and overexaggerating every point he tries to make, I might welcome that with open arms.

if i had ten minutes to live, i'd probably spend it just brushing kb's hair, stopping only to inhale it's beauty before going back to long luxurious brush strokes of the greatest mane since repunzel let her locks flow from the tallest of towers. i mean that in a heterosexual way.

The comments from Mets fans there seem to be extremely down on him being a starter / seem to think it would be a very bad idea for the Cubs to use him that way.
The only glimmer is the 'change of scenery' thing, and the comment from one of them that Rick Petersen might be to blame for screwing around with him.
I like that we have Marshall, Samardzija and Heilman (and others even) to battle it out for that spot - really think there could be a good chance one of them catches fire. That would be sweeeet.
