As Dirk said, we are definitely going to miss the 2008 version of Mark DeRosa. It remains to be seen if the 2009 version of DeRosa will be AS missed.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Agreed. How quickly people forget Gary Gaetti... and every other veteran who the Cubs overpaid after an abnormally strong season.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Gaetti? Really? Gaetti hadn't had a good season in 10 years (1995 being an outlier) before we picked him up mid-season. He was also 39 when we got him and 40 when we signed him to a 1-year deal.
Plus, we still had DeRosa under contract for relatively cheap when we traded him.
I don't see the comparison.

Aside from the fact that it wasn't Hendry who signed him, it's worth noting that Gaetti was 40 years old in 1998.

Highlights of Heilman's WGN Radio and XM interviews.
<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->WGN Radio - Sports Central with Dave Kaplan
Heilman attended Fan Fest in Seattle last weekend
He was at home in Chicago when he received the call and was surprised about the trade
Heilman did not think he would be traded twice this winter
The Mariners GM called him and broke the news. Heilman said the Mariners were not looking to trade him
Heilman said on one hand he is kind of sad he was not able to pitch for the Mariners but on the other hand he is more excited to be with the Cubs. He told Kaplan he knows what it is like to be a Cubs fan and has an idea of what it will be like pitching for the Cubs.
Heilman grew up watching the Cubs on WGN and listening to Pat Hughes and Ron Santo on the radio
The first big league game Heilman saw in person was at Wrigley
Heilman wants to be a starter and was told to report to camp prepared to be a starter
Heilman said it is up to the manager and coaching staff to determine his role. He is excited that he will have a chance to earn the job in Spring Training.
Heilman reiterated to Kaplan that he is very familiar with the Cubs tradition. He said hopefully the Cubs will be able to figure out the missing pieces from the last two years and get to the World Series.
Dave Kaplan asked Heilman about knee pain he dealt with last year. He said his knee feels great right now<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->XM Radio - MLB Live with Dave Simms and Kevin Kennedy
Heilman is ready to start the season and reiterated many of the same points early on that he discussed with Dave Kaplan
Heilman admitted that he looked at a few places to live while he was in Seattle last weekend
Heilman has not talked to Jim Hendry since the trade. Hendry is on his way back from Italy. Heilman has talked with Randy Bush.
Heilman has not heard anything in regards to Jake Peavy being traded to the Cubs
He has always wanted to start. He likes the routine and schedule. It is a lot easier to prepare to be a starter than to pitch out of the pen because of always being on call.
The bullpen can be mentally taxing and as a reliever you have to be on top of your game every night
As a starter, Heilman feels he will have time to develop his secondary pitches
There is more fitness involved in starting but sometimes a starter can win a game even without his best stuff<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Well, I guess we can all give up on the idea of Peavy and start rooting for Heilman to get his shit together. After a couple of solid years, Jim Hendry is back on my shit list.

Especially if it's that desire that was the factor that caused Derosa to be traded.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Every year, Hendry obsesses about something. This year, it's "handedness." Somehow he's convinced that we lost the series to the Dodgers because we didn't have any LH hitters.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
That's not why we lost the series, but to completely ignore the fact that the Dodgers never once even got a left hander up in the bullpen would be foolish.
The Cubs still won 97 games, but having Fuk completely collapse, and Edmonds revert to form makes things far too easy for the other team, tactically. If having Bradley in the lineup forces a right handed pitcher to come out of the game an inning before he normally would, that could help immensely.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
We lost the series because Dempster couldn't get the fucking ball over the plate.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
There it is again. Let's ignore the fact that Ramirez and Soriano went 3 for 25 with no RBI, our entire infield made an error in game 2, and we failed time and time again to hit with runners in scoring position, particularly Aramis.

I know your stance, Clapp, and I know you're familiar with mine, so I'm not going to rehash my side of the argument again.
The entire team blew (with maybe one or two exceptions). I'm pretty sure we agree ok that.

I just feel that other than the Dempster and Bradley signings, Hendry has made a bunch of lateral or negative moves. I have been a big Hendry fan, but let's face it, he is an average gm when it comes to putting together a team. He's great at getting people to stay in Chicago for lower prices, but that usually comes with the cost of no trade clauses which shackle us in terms of flexibility. Hendry's greatest strength, and what makes him a slightly above average gm, is his ability to inspire loyalty in players because he's a class act. And that's not to be discounted.
But if he had no master plan, he should have left well enough alone this offseason. I have been considering the possibility that Lou is behind some of this shit, but the buck stops with Hendry.

me too. there's no doubt in my mind.
as for hendry. the lateral or negative moves aren't significant enough to really hurt this team and the positive moves are really gonna help.
i like the team the way it's constituted. my only real concern is injuries. if we can stay relatively healthy or at the very least not all get injured at the same time, we'll be just fine in 2009.
