Johnny Damon?
#31
I'm pretty close to BT's opinion as well. I just didn't understand why it is that surprising that people aren't enamored with the available FAs out there is all. If we're going to disagree about something, let's at least wait until Hendry screws it up.

And as I said earlier, I don't think we are really interested in Damon.

I would likely be able to stomach a one year contract for any of the available people. But I'd rather resign Reed and platoon him with Fuld before committing multiple years to any of them.

I think that is a good post. I totally agree.

However, I'm a little more critical than most because I believe in the domino effect of Jim's moves...one bad move definitely affects future moves, and that's how you paint yourself into a corner. (the kind of corner where "Damon as our CFer" actually looks like a decent, plausible move).

BTW, here's an important question: does anyone know Damon's road splits from the last couple of years? It seems like he's tailored for Yankee Stadium, but I could be wrong.

Damon was definitely better away from Yankee Stadium last season.

Home: .279/.382/.533
Away: .284/.349/.446

But his splits prior to that weren't as drastically different:

2008
Home: .313/.383/.463
Away: .293/.368/.459

Honestly, if he can put up numbers similar to what he's done away from Yankee Stadium, he'd be the best hitting option available.

If those are his splits, I think you mean to say he's a superstar in Yankee Stadium, and a slightly better Sam Fuld in all the other stadiums.

With all due respect to Fuld (I do appreciate the little guy more than most), he will never come close to approaching a .446 slugging in a full season.

17 of Damon's 24 homers came at the new Yankee windblown homerville.

Yeah, of course Damon is better than Fuld. Damon made $13 Million dollars last year, and Fuld made $350 grand. Damon made 37 times as much money, so you'd expect him to be a little better, no?

FWIW, if we have cash to blow, I'd enjoy having Damon play here. He'd suck in CF and doesn't have the arm to play RF, but Alf does have a wing, so maybe we could move Alf over to Right.
Damon is fun to watch, can get on base, is pretty fast, and having played in Boston and NY, would not be freaked out by the big city of Chi.

On the down side, he's 36 and is represented by Boras.

Also worth noting that he has a couple of WS rings, and 55 career games of postseason experience. Despite his supposed defensive shortcomings, I'd enjoy having him as a player too.

Plus, he has star quality and a hot wife. Normally I don't factor these things in, but if we're considering 4th OFer types like Byrd or Fuld, then what the hell....might as well be entertained with Damon.

Also, without being under the Yankee restrictions on facial hair, he might grow his disciple beard back. Like I said, good value for your entertainment dollar.

I love and agree with this post.

If we did sign him, we would have the worst defensive outfield in baseball. I also feel that he had the benefit of batting in between Jeter and ARoid which would probably inflate his numbers somewhat offensively. I was a fan of him a few years ago when he was a FA before signing with the Yankees, but not now.

I could live with that too. But I just fucking know that JH is going to sign a Marlon Byrd type to a 3 or 4 year contract that will make my head explode. I know that's what is going to happen. Hendry is going to sign someone and I can stomach a 2 year deal for Damon. I think one thing is certain and that is that JH is not going to stand pat.
