Johnny Damon?
#1
Multiple reports have the Cubs interested in signing Johnny Damon.

It appears that the Cubs are looking at Damon as a CF.

Damon may still be able to hit but no longer has the arm or probably the legs to play CF at least that's what the Yankees thought last season.

As there hasn't been a new topic posted lately, I thought I would add this piece of news from last week. Let the bashing begin.

I think Damon would be decent on a two year deal, but no more. He is 36 years old and his numbers were dramatically effected in a positive way by the new Yankess park last year. That said, he is the best OFer available not named Bay or Holliday. If we can sign him at 2 yr/$16M I wouldn't complain. I wouldn't get that excited either. There's a reason the Yankees didn't bite on his original asking price and signed Nick Johnson instead.

This has success written all over it.

At the same time, I think it's a longshot that we even make him an offer. Just my opinion though.

I hope you were being sarcastic Rok because I think this would be a disaster. If Damon played center (which he isn't capable of playing anymore) we would have the worst CF/LF tandem in baseball...they wouldn't get to anything. Toss in the fact that his HR totals went up because of Yankee stadium and it is a recipe for disaster. I wouldn't sign him for more than a 1 year deal.

This would be such a typical Cubs move.

Yes. I don't want him. I've never wanted him. Not even on a 1 year deal.

What I've learned from reading this board is that since the CF options available are all imperfect, we simply shouldn't field a center fielder this year.

I actually have a few preferences, and they are (in order of preference) to a) trade for a young CF or b ) sign a FA to a short term deal. If we could get Byrd on a 2 year deal, I'd be fine with that. I'd also be fine with Ellsbury as long as we don't pay up the ying yang in prospects in the process.

Every option is imperfect, but I also wouldn't mind upgrading at SS/2B as well, and I fear that if we enter into a costly contract in CF, it will preclude us from doing more at other positions. That's my only concern.

Damon sucks, Byrd sucks, Pods sucks, Cameron would have sucked, Crisp would have sucked. So we just shouldn't bother.

I've never loved anyone more than I do you...right now. Even more than I do Sophia Loren.

Ok, then what do you two suggest we do? Just sign the first old guy who returns Hendry's phone calls?

I actually would have been fine with Cameron for the right price. I also would have been fine with Crisp (not really sure why we didn't go after him). As for Damon, he is going to want too much for too long and being imperfect is one thing, being completely horrible is another and that is what he is in CF defensively these days.

Honestly, IF the Red Sox make Ellsbury available I would love for the Cubs to look into what it would take to get him. While people say he is overrated, I would love to have him at the top of the lineup with Fuk batting behind him.

I was thinking the same thing. It's typical that he doesn't realize it.

I'm simply saying that by simply choosing from what is available, this board has already decided that Hendry has made a mistake. He is doomed to failure, as literally NO ONE is acceptable. Every single candidate that has been brought up has been summarily dismissed by this board as being not an option. So Hendry cannot make the "right" choice. Every single one of them is the "wrong" choice (until they sign with someone else, then they will be OK).
