I also want to point out that while J Damon isn't a perfect option, he isn't as bad as you guys are saying. He had impressive offensive numbers last year, albeit in the new Yankees stadium. He also was quite good the year before, batting .303/.375/.461. He is a risk, since he's getting into his late 30s, but he his a quality ball player and would be worth a short term deal IMO.

I'm simply saying that by simply choosing from what is available, this board has already decided that Hendry has made a mistake. He is doomed to failure, as literally NO ONE is acceptable. Every single candidate that has been brought up has been summarily dismissed by this board as being not an option. So Hendry cannot make the "right" choice. Every single one of them is the "wrong" choice (until they sign with someone else, then they will be OK).

I'd still like to hear what your solution would be. It's easy to criticize everyone else for not liking the available options, but you must have an opinion as well.

Ok, all the people saying that Hendry would be wrong to do this or that are themselves wrong. Fine.
What do you think Hendry should actually do?

See, Straw...THAT I agree with. You can't just say "you guys are wrong". My bad...
I think Damon would be a good sign. I'd like him to lead off, hit .285, steal 25 bases, and play average defense. Two year contract...7-9M per...no more.

My main problem with Damon (and it isn't his age), is his CF defense. Also, I don't think he's a lock for 20+ hr, and his SB totals fell off a cliff last season, so it isn't clear to me if he is a leadoff type or middle of the order type. I have no idea, so to pay him anywhere near $10mil per would be a mistake IMO, and that is what he and Boras are asking for.

It's got ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with what I would do. NOTHING. I'm not saying everyone is wrong. Some of you are right. I'm simply pointing out the fact that the board, as a whole, is rigging the entire system for failure. When every option has been dismissed, there is nothing left. It's a setup so if/when whomever we sign doesn't work out, we can sit back and sagely shake our heads and tell everyone else we KNEW it was a bad signing, and how Hendry must have had a spike in his head when he signed THAT guy.
What would I do? I'd sign Byrd, and expect him to be Byrd. Or I'd sign Damon, expect his offense to go down, but still be happy that he is an above average offensive force. If nothing else, he gets on base. I'd live with his defense, especially in Wrigley. Or I'd move Fuk back to CF. I'd avoid Pods for anything more than a one year deal, and even with that, I'd lowball him. I'd trade for Ellsbury, but unlike the dimwitted Phil Rogers, I wouldn't give up 2 or 3 of our best prospects for an OPS+ under 100.
I wish that I believed in Fate. I wish I didn't sleep so late. I used to be carried in the arms of cheerleaders.

They were asking for $13M, which is when the Yanks told them to take a hike. Now the market for Damon appears empty, which is probably why Boras floated a story saying the Cubs are interested in his client's services. Rok, Damon's defense is also a concern to me. I'd probably prefer to put Soriano in RF where is only fielding asset (arm strength) could be put to good use. Then leave Fuk in CF, and put Damon in LF. That would be a fuggly outfield but there really aren't many other options. To get a decent CF we'd have to make a trade and I have no interest in gutting our farm system when we need to rely on it with our furture salary commitments.

Love the BS rumor mill, someone asks ESPN's Olney if Boston could trade Cameron if they decided to re-sign Bay or pick up Holliday. He answers that they could if Cameron before mid-June if Mike would agree to the trade.
Now, ESPN rumors has a spot saying that Boston would most likely have to be willing to eat part of his $15 MM contract in order to trade him. What?

And Abreu was asking for 12 million a year for 2 or 3 years last year. This is the sort of thing I would complain about AFTER Hendry actually commits 20 million to Damon. But I don't think that is going to happen.
