Cubs-White Sox Announcement?
<!--quoteo(post=93563:date=Apr 29 2010, 01:49 PM:name=MrSheps)-->QUOTE (MrSheps @ Apr 29 2010, 01:49 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><!--quotec--><!--quoteo(post=93558:date=Apr 29 2010, 11:26 AM:name=BT)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (BT @ Apr 29 2010, 11:26 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><!--quotec-->Out of all of them, the only ones I don't want to deal with are Sox fans. They are not in our division. They are not in our league.

I am much happier when we beat the Cardinals, because those games matter. The only joy I take from a Sox win is that it's one less game I have to hear bullshit from Sox fans. So the core argument is still that Sox fans are unbearable dicks, right? Because it does matter when we beat the Sox, it counts as a win. It's like if the Bears beat the Jets. You'd rather beat the Packers so that a division foe gets a loss while you get a win, but the win is still a win. That's the inherent baseball reason. And money isn't the only thing driving it, fans want it. I get that not all fans do, but the vast majority of Cubs fans would be upset if the series went away, we can agree on that right?

Maybe I've just been lucky and had good experiences at Cubs/Sox games and you guys have had the opposite. But I know my friends in Chicago always go to those games or at least try to, a couple of them even go to the Cell.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Maybe you have been lucky. I was at the game the Sox won in extra innings on Carlos Lee's grand slam. As I was leaving, a guy literally jumped in front of me and started screaming "YEEEESSS! YEEEESSSS!" into my face. Then, in the car on the way home, I listened to a guy call into a sportstalk radio program to explain how he burst into tears because he was so happy the Sox beat the Cubs.

Which brings me to the reason that this is worse than living in LA, or living in St. Louis. Because you only get shit there when the Cubs are in town. Chicago is a Sox town, as well as a Cubs town. So you have to listen to the Sox fans bullshit 50% of the time you pay attention to sports in Chicago.

And your Jets example works for me. A win against the Jets is a win nonetheless. However, if every time we played the Jets the city of Chicago was overrun with jackass Jet's fans for a week or two, who spent more time bashing the Bears than they did rooting for the Jets, getting in your face, and being obnoxious, how excited would you be every year for "Jets week"? I'm assuming not very.
I wish that I believed in Fate. I wish I didn't sleep so late. I used to be carried in the arms of cheerleaders.

<i>Vast</i> majority? I'm actually not sure if we can agree on that. Most (not all) of the Cubs fans I know are either indifferent to the series or dislike it. I'd much rather see a Cubs/Cards game than a Cubs/Sox game -- and most (not all) Cubs fans I know feel the same.

Just because I would rather see a Cubs/Cards game than a Cubs/Sox game doesn't mean I wouldn't be upset if the Cubs/Sox games were eliminated. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't exactly go cry in my pillow. But I have to admit, although there's not really a logical reason for it, I'm a little more interested when a Cubs/Sox series rolls around.

No kidding - this "rivalry" already sucks. These games already suck. Let's make more out of these games....fucking dumb.

This is more marketing bullshit. I haven't heard a single fan on either side clamouring for this kind of crap. Why are the marketing people pushing it on us?
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
And let me go ahead and quote this post from our Resident Sox Fan from earlier in the thread.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
See I can't buy that it's the Cubs marketing department pushing it on people. That's why the games sell out first and the tickets go for so much on stub hub and the like? And why the ratings are so high? Everyone has fallen for a trick, no one actually want to see the games independent of marketing? No way.

By the way, I prefer Cubs/Cards too, I just think Cubs/Sox is fun too.

Seriously though, it's not that I'm looking forward to Cubs/Sox right now. There has been times when I know the Cubs are going to lose against the Sox and just want to find a hole to hide in. However, most of the time I do enjoy watching Cubs/Sox. Maybe it's because I have some civil Sox fans that I can discuss the game with.

The Cubs and Sox should play each other with no more frequency than the Mariners and Marlins play each other.

<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I've had that YEEESSS thing happen a few places with a few different sports, I hated it. The sports radio thing is pathetic, but that would make me laugh, not piss me off. Anyway, I'm not saying that stuff doesn't suck, but that sounds about normal to me. Obviously most visiting team fans wouldn't do that, but that's kinda the same thing you get when the Dodgers fans get pissed that they're surrounded by Cubs fans in their park and then they win on a walk off. Look, some Giants fan got murdered in the Dodger stadium parking lot a few years back. When I've been to Cubs/Sox games there's usually a lot of older people still, a lot of calm and polite midwesterns still, and a lot of mixed groups of Cubs and Sox fans having a nice time together. Again, maybe I've been lucky or have thicker skin, or my idea of a bad sports watching environment is skewed by college sports or something, but it's generally been fun and not that vile to me. At least compared to say a Bears/Packers night game where there were two fights ending in blood in my section, or any experience I've ever had involving a Raider's fan.

I think it's hard to shrug off Butcher's feelings when we don't have to deal with his co-workers.

Plus, not everyone is going to handle every situation the same. For instance, if people corrected Butcher's grammar, I think he wouldn't think twice about it where as I would...

Let's just say I would react differently.

I can be sensitive about certain things, but a Sox fan making fun of me or the Cubs is not one of them for whatever reason. When I do run into such Sox fans and they give me shit, I just give them a blank stare and shrug. They usually will press me and ask why it doesn't bother me and I just give them the live and let live attitude. It's at that point that they feel like assholes and I'm pleased with myself.
