I don't know if you were speaking to me but I've been as vocal as anybody about this. All I was saying is we should win the division no matter what so we can afford to have a few issues going into midseason where we can make an acquisition or two to better prepare the team for the playoffs. Dude, the season doesn't start for me until October. No more running around the house screaming when Geovany Soto hits a homer to tie it in the 9th against the Brewers. I won't even get excited about winning the division. Championship or bust.

I don't think they ever win but this team is every bit as talented and has a better playoff rotation than many of the recent winners. If the hitters hit like they can, and our rotation pitches like they can, nobody would beat us. But they'll choke again I'm sure.

We're probably one of the top 5 or 6 teams in baseball. And since any team that gets into the playoffs can win if they get hot, then sure -- they can win it all with this team. That doesn't mean Hendry didn't make a bunch of boneheaded moves this offseason.

Just an illustration to see on paper exactly where we stand.

We have added Bradley, Gregg, Heilman, Vizcaino, Miles, Gathwright, probably the Bako, Stevens, Archer, Guab, and Williamson.

We have lost Wood, DeRosa, Marquis, Pie, Cedeno, and Ceda.

The rotation as it stands is

Zambrano
Dempster
Harden
Lilly
Fighting it out for the fifth spot are Marshall, Heilman, Shark, Gaudin, and Guzman.

The Bullpen
Marmol
Gregg
Cotts
Vizcaino
Stevens
All of the losers from the fifth starter derby. I think they will carry seven relievers. I also believe that Guzman might somehow have another option year?

The lineup as I currently see it.
Soriano
Fontenot /Miles
Lee
Bradley
Ramirez
Soto
Fukudome/Johnson
Theriot

The bench

Fontenot/Miles
Fukudome/Johnson
the Bako
Gathwright
The fifth bench spot is going to have to go to someone who can play the infield.

If it happens in the NLCS, yeah. I seriously want to just skip the regular season. I had a dream I was at a playoff game 2 nights ago, then I woke up all miserable. They win 70 games? I'll feel the same I do now. They win 95 games? I'll feel the same I do now. Until I see maybe somebody hit a fucking sac fly, come through with a big hit, anything in the playoffs, I'm going to be unsatisfied. Just some sign of having some sacks and stop acting like a bunch of pansies that can't handle the pressure.

My take on it is this: You can't really "plan" for October.
Nobody really knows what the magical x-factor is that helps teams run through the gauntlet of 3 straight post-season series.
About the only thing that stat researchers have pointed to is that it seems to help to have a kick-ass closer. That was one reason why I was against keelhauling Kerry Wood, but perhaps he'll be injured by October anyway.
And when Marmol is hot, he's as kick-ass as anybody.

The only thing you can really do is to keep getting yourself into the tournament. We're lucky to be in a weak division. All we have to do is GET there again, and we at least have a legit shot.
There's nothing better than to realize that the good things about youth don't end with youth itself. It's a matter of realizing that life can be renewed every day you get out of bed without baggage. It's tough to get there, but it's better than the dark thoughts. -Lance
