The likelyhood of Peavy
#46
I'd do it, really your just giving up a lot of mediocre players and one top prospect for him. Without Marshall and Castillo in there too I'm not even sure why the Padres would consider it. That's just Vitters and garbage.

Done.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
You can't give up all 3 of those plus 2-3 more prospects to get Peavy when the Padres don't really have any other team as an option as a trade partner.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Like I said, I don't think it will take that much. Say other teams are interested then. Would I give up those players to get Jake Peavy? Absolutely.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I agree, but it works out for us that the Padres aren't dealing from a position of power.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Right.

I wish we could keep Vitters and still get Peavy.

If you could only keep one of Marshall or Vitters, which would you keep?

The obvious question is, do you keep the guy who has a fair bit of value to the current Cubs on the field, or the guy who could someday have a lot of value to the Cubs on the field?

Even if Vitters maxes out his abilities, I still don't think he'll be equal to Peavy. We have Alf for 6 more years in LF, and it's doubtful Aram's on another team for at least a few years as well. So if those things hold true, Vitters is blocked. Even if we can't keep him, like I said, we're a big market team. We shouldn't have a problem(unless Ricketts is a gigantic douche which it doesnt seem like will be the case) signing corner outfielders/infielders. In most organizations, Vitters holds much more value.

Marshall. We're in win now mode and Marshall's swing abilities are incredibly valuable to this team right now. I liked Lou's Harden for 5, Marshall for 2-3 formula last year, and Marshall can also just start for Harden once or twice a month. Ability to start, relieve, give us another lefty, he never complains, and he pitched very well this past October. The pitch Manny hit out, you just tip your cap.

I would love to see one more year of Vitters. There is no way we are going to pick up Lee after his contract expires, the money we could save with vitters would go a long way towards balancing out all of these backloaded contracts we have. Everyone else I have seen mentioned has a lot of value to a major league team trying to fill out a roster for $40 million. For us they are all easily replaceable pieces. At the end of the day I am nervous as shit about taking on Peavy with the shoulder and elbow problems. Power sinker/slider pitchers break down , it is just a matter of how serious the injuries are and how long the recovery. If we have to pick up the option on Peavy I have zero interest, and I am leery with the current four year guarantee. I would be interested to see what else this package of prospects can get us. I would also be interested in seeing how low the market for Sheets has gone and keeping all of the prospects for when we know exactly what we do need.

It won't happen, but I would take Sheets on a 1 year incentive laden deal.

As for Vitters, I don't like giving him up, but he is going to be the centerpiece of any Peavy deal. He is our top prospect, no way the Padres trade us Peavy and not get our top prospect in the deal.

As always, if we win a championship, I don't care who the hell we give up.

I'd give up all that for Peavy and wouldn't lose any sleep over it. I want a World Championship now and worry about the future later.

For a rotation of - Zambrano-Peavy-Harden-Dempster-Lilly... that is just filthy. Throw the farm at it.

Josh who?!

However, Clapp, there are two reasons that I'm a little more thinking like Captian:
1-Almost an exact replica of the Peavy scenario played out all winter long, last year. And yet Mr. Brian Roberts remained an Oriole.
2-Assuming that Mr. Hendry always has a rhyme or reason for some of his bizarre moves was a disease I was cured of back in about '05.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
It's one reason for you: you don't believe in Hendry.

The Roberts situation is completely different. MacPhail completely fucked with us and wanted half the farm system.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
1-Do I think Hendry works in a linear manner? No. I think his methods are similar to a drunk man driving in the bumper-car ride. But, occasionally, that drunk man comes out unscathed.

I do think Jim has worked the Peavy thing pretty well, and I agree with Ace that our chances are at least 50/50, probably better.

2-The Roberts thing was actually <i>very</i> similar. Almost identical, right down to the opposing GM asking for the moon. And if you think that little Andy MacPhail is in the same league as the Padres brain trust of Kevin Towers/Sandy Alderson/Paul DePodesta, then I guess you weren't aware of the goings-on concerning the Chicago Cub baseball team during the years 1994-2006.

One of those drunks who build a team that wins 2 division championships in a row, with a third one very likely? One of those drunk guys who build a team that wins 97 games? Dude, when are you going to give Hendry at least some credit for knowing what the fuck he is doing?

On topic, I think we can get peavy, but if the Padres try to hold us up, they can go fuck.

With a payroll that exceeds the nearest in the division by $40 mill, I could probably put together a couple division winners, too. Just sayin'.
