The likelyhood of Peavy

However, Clapp, there are two reasons that I'm a little more thinking like Captian:
1-Almost an exact replica of the Peavy scenario played out all winter long, last year. And yet Mr. Brian Roberts remained an Oriole.
2-Assuming that Mr. Hendry always has a rhyme or reason for some of his bizarre moves was a disease I was cured of back in about '05.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
It's one reason for you: you don't believe in Hendry.

The Roberts situation is completely different. MacPhail completely fucked with us and wanted half the farm system.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
1-Do I think Hendry works in a linear manner? No. I think his methods are similar to a drunk man driving in the bumper-car ride. But, occasionally, that drunk man comes out unscathed.

I do think Jim has worked the Peavy thing pretty well, and I agree with Ace that our chances are at least 50/50, probably better.

2-The Roberts thing was actually <i>very</i> similar. Almost identical, right down to the opposing GM asking for the moon. And if you think that little Andy MacPhail is in the same league as the Padres brain trust of Kevin Towers/Sandy Alderson/Paul DePodesta, then I guess you weren't aware of the goings-on concerning the Chicago Cub baseball team during the years 1994-2006.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
You know that the Padres have to cut at least 5 million dollars right? They have to trade somebody.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Not so fast my friend.

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->Alderson can say with 95% finality that Peavy will start the season with the Padres. By the end of next week he'll be able to say for certain. He doesn't want to make a guarantee because something crazy might happen. The decision will definitely be made by February 1.
Alderson says it is possible that player prices may drop and the Padres may decide to pick them up. "We're pretty close to being where we are going to be". The Padres need to remain flexible.
There is no hard payroll number. "We don't have to be at $40 million." The only way to significantly affect the payroll would be to trade Peavy or Giles. Alderson sees both of those players starting the season with them. If the Padres play well the payroll issue becomes moot.
Alderson thinks the starting staff will be a tough call after the first three of Peavy, Young and Baek.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
A herd of buffalo can move only as fast as the slowest buffalo. When the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members.

In much the same way the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, we all know, kills brain cells, but naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers.

There's not too many teams lining up to trade for Giles and his 9 million dollars this year when hes 38.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
If they really have to get to $40 M, the only guys they can trade are Peavy, Giles, and Gonzalez (I think). I'm not sure I believe that it's set in stone that they have to be below $40 M though.

Giles has a no-trade, and he's already used it once. Trading Gonzales would be absurd; he's 26, underpaid, and one of the best players in baseball.
That leaves Peavy. Which is good for us.

I think it's a tough call. I think Ricketts will give Hendry the go ahead, but that doesn't mean that Towers won't be unreasonable in his demands.

Right...that sums up my thoughts. Plus I think the Pads may just decide to keep him.Even though Hendry has bent over backwards trying to meet Towers demands of who he wants.

I hope I'm wrong as all fuck on this one my friends,but dont count your chickens before they hatch.

I just hope Hendry hasn't made all of these acquisitions blindly. If he's collecting all of these minor league arms, just in the hopes that Towers will decide to deal with him when he's all done, then he's an absolute fool. After dealing DeRosa and Pie, I'm really hoping he had some sort of assurances from Towers, or even a "handshake" type of deal already in place. Otherwise, he's going to look really idiotic if the deal doesn't go down or Towers holds him hostage.

Yep, I've been fearing that for a couple of weeks now. I just hope that if there is a master plan, that the parties involved don't start altering their promises/demands right in the middle of the process. That would make this all very confusing.

I think it is going to happen, and Peavy is going to get hurt as soon as he puts on the Cubs uniform.

I don't think it will happen. This is the Chicago Cubs afterall.

Don't get me wrong, I will be extremely happy if I am wrong.

I think we will get him, but i don't think it will be before July. However, I hope I am wrong and he reports on the 14th to Mesa with the rest of the Cubs pitchers and catchers.

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->Hendry still after Peavy
Cubs general manager Jim Hendry is expected to approach the new owners about about increasing the payroll. His goal is to make a trade for Jake Peavy, the Daily Herald reports.

"Ricketts can help himself and his club immediately by removing all the levels of nonsense that existed between general manager and owner.

Soon, GM Jim Hendry will be seeking permission to add payroll for 2009 so he can get Jake Peavy from San Diego.

We can't imagine Ricketts saying, "No,'' and the Cubs should be able to land Peavy before spring training begins, as the Cubs have been his top choice since the Padres decided to shop him."<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I have always thought we were going to get him and still do. There is just way to many coincidental things going on for this not to go down. Plus Peavy has pretty much made it known the only team he is going to accept a trade to is the Cubs.

I don't think this is similar to the Roberts deal either. In some respects I guess you could say that it is but I think the similarities are few. I sure don't remember the Cubs trading for the exact pieces that the Orioles wanted like they have with the Pads. I also don't remember the O's cutting payroll last off-season like the Pad's have this off-season. Those are just a couple of differences but probably the biggest differences in the two.
