Yeah, because it's reasonable to think 2 guys approaching 30 years old that have never done anything on the MLB level can replace Lee and the Cubs can reinvest $10 M in a difference maker without giving up something to get that difference maker.

No, what you missed is the "don't be a hyper literalist" boat.

The Cardinals have made a "career" of finding late 20s nobodies who show up out of nowhere and perform adequately or better at the Major League level.

Ludwick is and always thought to be a good player, he just couldn't stay healthy, I'd say he doesn't count. Bo Hart played in a career 88 games and had a line of .277/.317/.395. Duncan got his feet wet in the MLB when he was 24. Schumaker and Ankiel have each had 1 good season. Like I said, totally overblown.

And that was just off the top of my head. If I cared enough to do research, I'm sure there'd be plenty more. (oh, and you know that Jake Fox is all of 26, right?)

The point remains: the only thing overblown is your pithy assurances that Hoffpaiur and Fox, platooning to maximize their already CLEARLY ML-calibre hitting ability couldn't easily equal Derrek Lee's obviously, rapidly declining offensive skills.

Not every position on a WS winning team is populated by a $10 million dollar All-Star vet.

And none of them should be covered by 2 career minor leaguers in a platoon.

Seems a bit unfair to call Fox a "career" minor leaguer, no? And Hoffpauir would have been a Major Leaguer a couple years ago if not for Derrek Lee never missing any time.

I think you'll find I'm much less out on a limb with this platoon idea than the Hollandbois (although many agreed with me then that it would be an ACCEPTABLE platoon because no one else was available).

You're missing (or blatantly ignoring) the main point: Derrek Lee SUCKS now.

I'm not missing the point, I'm well aware that Lee is not what he used to be. I'm also aware that Hoffpauir/Fox would be worse. Also, someone who is virtually the same age as I am and has yet to see significant time in the MLB is a career minor leaguer, no matter how you slice it. Also, saving $10 M does nothing when there's no one to spend it on and is counterproductive when it would be used to gain salary in a trade that would cost talent in the first place.
