Closest I could find quickly:
QUOTE Piniella said: "I've got a good bullpen here, OK, and I trust my bullpen. I'm bringing back a pitcher [Zambrano] on three days' rest Sunday [for the Game 4 that never was], and I took a shot with my bullpen. It didn't work today."

I don't know where this belongs, probably it's own thread, but here it is...

QUOTE Carlos Zambrano took some grounders at third base and shortstop on Saturday afternoon, but he isn't in the mix for emergency backup to solve the infield deficit.

Zambrano looked good at third, at least if he doesn't have to move much. Has he ever played third before?

"No, but I can," the pitcher said. "Not shortstop, but third. I can at least knock it down, and with the good arm I have, I can throw. I can be the next Ken Caminiti. He used to play third, and he had that accurate arm."

leaving zambrano in was the right move. putting marmol in was the right move. neither choice was wrong. sorry.

Maybe so. But leaving Zambrano in would have been the better move.

it's just as likely that zambrano would have given up that home run. it was the same right move.

Well, I don't know that we can really speculate on that, but I see what you're saying. All I'm saying is that, given the situation and all the information at the time of the move, Lou chose the less-good move.

I disagree- Z was on that day. No one was hitting a HR off him.

marmol was on all year long. did you think someone would hit a home run off of him?

You don't use Marmol in the 7th in a tie playoff game -- unless Z put a couple of guys on base beforehand. It was a misuse of resources -- no matter what the outcome was.

Sorry. Stupid move.

of course not- but I remember not liking the move at the time because it just seemed to throw everything out of rythm. There's no reason to take a guy out at 85 pitches when he regulary goes 110+. The game was going along fine and suddenly everyone in the bar was like, WTF is going on? On paper the move may not have been "bad," but it was such a surprising move that it threw everyone for a loop. They would never say so, but I have to imagine that the players felt it too- maybe even Marmol who probably was surprised to be going in that early given Z's pitch count.

So yeah, I'd say Fontenot is hitting pretty well right now.

.266 .359 .494 w/ 5 HR's and 14 RBI. Not too shabby.

.235 .301 .431 w/ 5 HR's and 19 RBI. huh. well nevermind.

Right now, Fontenot is doing exactly what everyone expected him to do. When this team gets 100% healthy in the starting lineup, no one will miss that other guy.
