The guy that we saw in the postseason is unfortunately closer to the reality of what Dempster has been throughout his career. He's a guy who always struggles with command and just looking at his walk totals thus far doesn't leave me with much confidence that he's fixed any of the control issues he had for most of his career. Maybe Dempster is ok as a #4/5 SP, but at the rate that we're paying him, he won't ever live up to our expectations.

This time it was catcher Geovany Soto, who asked to see Piniella about his status after being out of the lineup for two straight days.

Piniella said he wanted to "let this guy relax so when he gets back in he can start anew." So will Soto start Friday night in Cincinnati?

"I don't know about my plan yet," he said. "My plans are very flexible."

Soto is still the starting catcher, but Koyie Hill may get more than one or two starts a week.

"I'm interesting in winning baseball games, OK?" Piniella said. "And if he swings the bat, he'll play more than he has, no question. The object here is to put a team on the field that can win with consistency. But, obviously, Geo is my No. 1 catcher. I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing, but considering how many key players have either sucked royally, or missed a bunch of games with injuries, it's amazing that we're at .500.

Once we get A-Ram back and Harden healthy, things will hopefully brighten up. We should be able to make up the 3.5 games as long as we can hold on to what we have now.

Soriano is about due for one of his streaks as well.
