Harden and Heilman Claimed on Waivers
#16
Every team puts pretty much their entire roster on waivers every year. They just don't tell you about it.

Heilman should be on the way out.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Is Harden going to be a Type A? If so - do the Cubs offer him arbitration and risk him accepting it? Will he draw big $ FA interest if someone has to surrender a first for him?

I guess anything is possible - but Harden's best bet might be arbitation and a guarantee of no less than 7.3mm. How much more will he get than that? Would someone give him a multi-year deal?

The answers to those are:

He's projected Type A, yes.

The Cubs would risk it, yes, because assuming health, they'd be happy to have him back at $8 mill (approximately) on a one-year deal.

The question is whether a team would sign him knowing they lose a pick. I think yes, but it is not as certain as the first two.

I'm 99.9 percent positive teams would sign Rich Harden, and give up a pick. Burnett was not only signed, but given an assload of money, and his injury history is no better than Harden's.

False statement. Burnett had thrown 220 innings for Toronto the prior season to signing with NYY. He also has 3 seasons of 200+ innings on his resume and proved he could get AL east hitters out. Now I think his contract was idiotic, b/c he still has shown he is brittle but his history shows he is capable of throwing 200 innigs. Harden has not even thrown 150 since his rookie year and has been on the DL every season since then.

Harden's IP:
2004 - 189
2005 - 128 (DL)
2006 - 46 (DL)
2007 - 25 (DL)
2008 - 148 (DL)
2009 - 124 (DL, on pace for about 160)

Burnett's IP:
2000 - 82 (half season in minors)
2001 - 173
2002 - 204
2003 - 23 (DL)
2004 - 120 (DL)
2005 - 209
2006 - 135 (DL)
2007 - 165 (DL)
2008 - 221
2009 - 164 (on pace for 205)

How the fuck is that a "false statement"? While everything you say is true, Harden has never blown his FUCKING ELBOW out. He had Tommy John surgery for Christ's sake. I'd say that makes the claim that his injury history is no better than Harden's a pretty reasonable statement. Certainly not "false".

I think he would be most important to trade on the roster. There's no way we're getting draft picks for him as a type A.

Actually, those that return from TJ Surgery often say their elbow feels much stronger than before. I have no interest in arguing this with you because generally we feel the same way. I just think that Harden's injury stigma is much larger than Burnett's and they are not comparable.

Then that's your OPINION, not a fact that could be true or false. That's all I'm saying.

Why pay him 3 million a year when we can pay Gaub, Parker, Stevens, and others a fraction of that?

It may not matter if we keep Grabow around or not. If this team continues its decline into next season, we may indeed have to blow it up.

Grabow has proven to be an effective major leaguer. Those you've mentioned have not. That's why.

Antonio Alfonseca
Mike Remlinger
LaTroy Hawkins
Kent Mercker
Scott Williamson
Bob Howry
Scott Eyre
Kevin Gregg

These guys were all proven major leaguers when the Cubs traded for them or signed them to big contracts. What's your opinion of them?
