Starlin

<!--quoteo(post=86656:date=Apr 7 2010, 12:49 PM:name=KBwsb)-->QUOTE (KBwsb @ Apr 7 2010, 12:49 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><!--quotec-->I don't think there's any doubt that Castro is RIGHT NOW a superior defensive player to Theriot (and Hak Ju-Lee (sp) is supposed to be better than either of them with the glove).
I think the reason Castro remains in the minors is because he has a chance to be a serious bat, and the Cubs don't want to rush him, C-Patt style. Or maybe they don't want to start his arbitration clock. Either way, there are decent reasons for letting him soak up some more experience in the minors.

By contrast, Elvis Andrus of Texas was thrown into the fire at a very young age last year, and did well...he nearly won the GG. But he doesn't project to be half the hitter that Castro does, and he is probably defensively superior, so the Rangers rolled the dice.

IMO, if Starlin is raking in a month, screw it, bring him up.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I'd have been persuaded to play Blanco at short but I'm not ready to be persuaded into rushing Castro. As a team, we're just not that close. If he's the puzzle piece we need in August to contend, maybe. Right now, he's where he should be.

Absolutely, and I've felt the same way. But after watching some of his at bats this spring, I think he'll be at least tolerable at the plate and is ready to go.

And our window is closing. If you want to win with this bunch, you have to do it now, so it might be worth rolling the dice on a decision like this. From everything I've heard, it seems he's pretty polished and mentally capable of handling this better than say Patterson and Pie did. If nothing else, you try it out for a few weeks and send him back down if he looks lost.

Well, you don't want to rush a guy so he can potentially fail in the majors and go back down disappointed with himself and/or start unnecessarily using up options. If Castro is the player we think he is, it won't be long before he proves that he belongs in the majors. I say we keep him in Iowa until he looks like he's truly ready to go.

Yeah, I agree. If an athlete is too mentally weak to be able to deal with a little failure, then that person was never going to make it to begin with. Bottom line is if this kid can help us and appears (not saying that is the case yet) to be wasting his time down in the minors, then he needs to be given an opportunity to prove himself. Our organization tends to be overly cautious and does a piss-poor job of evaluating its own players, so for once I'd like to see them be a little more aggressive with a positional prospect.

Rich Hill had that happen when he came up the first time or two. He struggled and then went back to Iowa with a tail between his legs.

If the arbitration clock didn't exist, he'd be on the MLB squad right now. That I'm certain of.

Stop being so tough on tampons.

Rich Hill once made me agree with a Ozzie Guillen comment. I will never forgive the pud.

This, I agree with. I'm pretty sure they're going to try to hold out until June before calling him up.

The Rays tried to do it with Longoria, and ended up coming up in late April or May a couple years ago. If Castro is good enough for the majors, he'll dominate in Tennessee and be up just as fast, regardless of our attempts at stashing him.

FWIW we have 39 guys on the 40-man. Saving room for him perhaps?

Not Castro-specific. 40-man rosters are often not 40 players long, especially at this point. 39 is actually more than I'd expect (but they can move Guzman to the 60-day DL). That way, if they make a trade, sign someone, or call up someone not on the 40-man, they don't have to put someone on waivers.
This is not some silly theory that's unsupported and deserves being mocked by photos of Xena.  [Image: ITgoyeg.png]
