Glad to hear that the Blanco injury had no impact on Castro - I didn't expect it would, but it's good to have confirmation.

I would have preferred he go to AA. I'm wondering if Barney is going to just hit the bench now. Maybe they'll move him around so he get used to other positions so he can be a utility player (which is what he should be groomed to be).

I'm quite sure he'd be very good at 2nd base, but not sure about anywhere else. Maybe 3rd. He has the quickness and arm for it.

QUOTE "This will give me a chance to play (Mike) Fontenot at shortstop, which I said I needed to do," Piniella said. "We've got (prospect Rex) Barney in camp. We've got enough."

Rex Barney? Did I miss something?

Who quoted this? I always wonder why writers put things in parenthesis most of the time, if the person they are quoting actually said it or if they are just filling the blank.

It means the person didn't actually say it, and the writer is trying to help the reader out. Brackets, IMO, are better for that purpose than parentheses.

Parenthesis are correct for filling in a piece of information in a quotation that the speaker didn't actually say. This is useful for clarifying, when a quote taken out of context, doesn't contain a bit of information that's necessary for a reader to make sense of it. It's most often used to complete a name of a person or place that could be confusing without the clarification.

I pretty much knew that, but I still wonder if some "writers" actually understand this or if they are just making shit up most of the time when they add things back in that weren't actually spoken. It's been a pet peeve of mine for a long time.

Sullivan, so it's understandable. Plus, it's tough to think right when you're getting an atomic wedgie from Carlos Zambrano.

My understanding is bracket's are used when the writer followed up on the source for clarification and parenthesis are used for the writer to just put in his/her own interpretation of what they think the source meant. Not quite sure on that though.

I hadn't heard that, but I would love to know for sure. I only know the legal world, and we use only brackets, so I'm partial.

Upon further investigation, I think I completely made that up. From what I've read, clarification of any kind needs to be in brackets to be written properly. Parentheses are not supposed to be used in this situation although I read this from a written English perspective and not a journalistic perspective.
