He would have probably taken less, but hell, good for him.

I'm not against anyone getting a pay day, good for him. But any GM that pays more than he has to for a player is an idiot.

We'll never know what Yankee/Red Sox contracts for Mauer would have looked like, and I'm sure they would have bid against each other considering their lack of catchers in the future. Did the Twins overpay? Yes, they did. But at the same time, the Twins needed to keep him.

I would have offered 6 years at $117M ($18M in 2011-2014, $22.5M team options for 2015-2016).
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Your offer is much more reasonable.

I am never sure if a contract like that creates a ton of pressure or alleviates it.

I think about that all the time Tom...so disheartening that Prior's "perfect" mechanics and Dusty ruined him

As for the contract, it is a lot of money, but Mauer is AMAZING and just now hitting his prime. Like someone said, he plays in the AL so he can DH. Could they regret years 6, 7, & 8...sure....but years 1-5 are likely to be great for them and for Mauer.

As for Pujols, with A-Rod's contract a couple years ago and now with Mauer's, he has GOT to be looking at 30 million a year!

Even though we would not have taken Mauer with the second pick, we would have taken Teixiera.

It's absurd how much money this guys make... Mauer will be making around 37G a day, can you imagine that? making almost 2 million every month for 8 years? shit!

Right... But we wouldn't have been able to keep him past 08, and Derrek Lee's been terrific, and even better than Teixeira a couple of seasons.

Really, there's no reason to complain about anything the Cubs did. They made the right pick by taking arguably the best pitcher out of college since Roger Clemens, and the guy was already a top-5 pitcher in the league soon after. It's just like the Nats absolutely made the right decision in taking Strasburg, even if he ruins his arm in a couple years like Prior did. Just bad Cubs luck. I'm sure Mauer would've sucked in a Cubs uniform anyway.
