HOLY MINNESOTA TWINS!! - Runnys - 03-21-2010

8 years/184 million (full no trade)...WOW!! For all the talk in years past about Minnesota being a small market team they sure are dishing out the money. I think their payroll this year is going to be almost 100 million.

8 years seems like a lot for a catcher, but I am assuming he won't catch the entire 8 years. Also, it is going to be real interesting to see how their new park plays.

HOLY MINNESOTA TWINS!! - Ace - 03-21-2010

WOW. That is a HUGE contract.

HOLY MINNESOTA TWINS!! - Fly - 03-21-2010

Probably a good time to do it with them opening up a new park and the year after the playoffs. His bat can play at DH or first base, so the years shouldn't be a huge deal.

HOLY MINNESOTA TWINS!! - Coach - 03-21-2010

Good for them.

HOLY MINNESOTA TWINS!! - ColoradoCub - 03-21-2010

Too much money for a catcher, and his bat is too good to take a day off every week, but I'm sure they already know that.

HOLY MINNESOTA TWINS!! - funkster - 03-21-2010

Good lord that's a lot of money.

HOLY MINNESOTA TWINS!! - cigar - 03-21-2010

Pujols probably blew a load after he saw that contract.

HOLY MINNESOTA TWINS!! - jstraw - 03-21-2010

That contract is stupid. It will be regretted.

HOLY MINNESOTA TWINS!! - Destined - 03-21-2010

Twins had to do it. He's the hometown kid, so there was noway they weren't going to take care of him.

He would have probably taken less, but hell, good for him.

I'm not against anyone getting a pay day, good for him. But any GM that pays more than he has to for a player is an idiot.

I'm hoping to hell that Pujols looked long at that. Either the Cards resign Pujols to a similar contract and then have TONS of money hung up in Pujols, Holliday and Carpenter, making them less likely to go after anyone else big name....

OR

Pujols walks.

Either way, it should be helpful to us.

We'll never know what Yankee/Red Sox contracts for Mauer would have looked like, and I'm sure they would have bid against each other considering their lack of catchers in the future. Did the Twins overpay? Yes, they did. But at the same time, the Twins needed to keep him.

I would have offered 6 years at $117M ($18M in 2011-2014, $22.5M team options for 2015-2016).
