Final Cubs Stat Breakdown
#46
I didn't think it was possible to have less of an attachment to a team than the 2009 club, but this team has surpassed them by a mile. At least last season there were some exciting games and a couple of competitive series against the Cards and other division rivals. I have no interest in and have made zero connection with this lethargic bunch.

Cubs against Pittsburgh and Houston: 3-11
The rest of MLB against Pitt and Houston: 65-34

I stand corrected. We're now 4-11 against PIT & HOU.
I got nothin'.

We were also in first place as late as July, IIRC.

And who would have believed on Opening Day that Carlos Freaking Silva would be our ace by leaps and bounds and Z our worst SP, while Lee and Ramirez look like amateurs? It is rigoddamndiculous.

From Olney's column today on Silva:
QUOTE He threw 73.5 percent of his pitches for strikes, his highest strike percentage in a game since August 2007. He mixed in 31 changeups (25 of them when even or ahead in the count), and did not give up a hit with the change for the second straight game. Silva's last two opponents (the Cardinals and Pirates) are 0-for-13 when putting changeups in play. He did not surrender a hit in a 2-strike count (0-for-11). He faced more than four batters only once in his seven innings. A leadoff double by Lastings Milledge in the seventh was the only run to score. Pirates were 1-for-6 with RISP. Additional note: Silva's 3-0 count to Akinori Iwamura in the fifth inning was only the second time he's been 3-0 on anyone all season. A four-pitch walk to Jason Bay on April 21 was the other.

Pretty impressive

Maybe we can turn Silva into some decent prospects at the deadline. Doubtful, but if he keeps pitching like he is then someone might be willing to take on his contract.

I think he'll be VERY appealing at the deadline if he keeps it up and we're in sell mode. If some team sees itself as a solid starter away from a deep run at the post-season...they'd give up good prospects. Who wouldn't?

By my count, the Cubs starting staff has thrown 37 quality starts out of 58 games. Of 37 quality starts, the Cubs have only won 21 of those games. I hate to say it, but my hope for a playoff contender has officially run out. It would take an incredibly notable stretch of wins to possibly put this team back in a position to compete.

Wow, not a single above .500 month so far. What a joke. I can't remember the last time that happened, even through all the shitty seasons I've witnessed over the years.

Hey, now. There's something to be said for consistency.
