MLB News & Notes (other than Cubs or Sox)
Anyone remember the scuttlebutt following the Soriano signing that the reason we went to 8 years was to beat the Angels - because there was a California law against personal service contracts longer than like 7 years (which was never confirmed). Well, the Angels offered Tex an 8-year deal, so I guess that was BS.

And makes me dislike the Soriano signing even more.

QUOTE Arizona signed Felipe Lopez to a one-year contract, giving the Diamondbacks a low-risk look at a former first-round pick who has been a disappointment for most of his big-league career, since he was rushed to the majors by Toronto in 2001. Despite his up-and-down (mostly down) history, Lopez has ability and I like the chance this signing gives Arizona to catch one of his up periods.

I heard on the radio that Philly resigned Jamie Moyer for 2 years. Don't know the price.

Furcal back to the Braves?
QUOTE According to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, the Braves have entered the bidding for Rafael Furcal, likely with a three-year proposal with a vesting option for 2012.
The Braves were expected to pursue Furcal if they traded Yunel Escobar, but that hasn't happened. Apparently, they're going for it anyway and will make the pieces fit later on. A trade of Escobar for pitching would be a possibility. Another option would be to put Furcal at second base and Kelly Johnson in left field. Furcal is expected to make a decision on his future on Tuesday. The A's, Dodgers and Royals are also believed to be in the mix. Dec. 16 - 1:39 am et

The Cardinals signed Joe Thurston and some other scrub. Hard to believe a few years ago Thurston was some big prospect. I'm sure he'll make the team out of spring training and hit about .300 for them.

Minor signings in the division:

Trot Nixon and Chris Duffy sign minor league deals with the Brewers.

Astros sign Aaron Boone. Sounds like Blum will be the starter at 3rd and Boone will get some playing time there as well. So that's a major downgrade offensively from Ty Wigginton.

Rockies sign pitcher Rusch to one-year deal

Glendon Rusch. (AP)Continuing to address their need for left-handed relievers, the Rockies on Thursday signed Glendon Rusch to a one-year, $750,000 minor-league deal today.

Rusch made it clear he wanted to return to Colorado after enjoying a positive experience last season. He worked as both a starter and reliever, a versatility that led the Rockies to bring him back.

He will be used as a swingman, someone capable of pitching in the bullpen or rotation. He joins Alan Embree as the second left-handed reliever to sign with Colorado this winter.

Rusch will have to make the team in Spring Training for his contract to be guaranteed.

A herd of buffalo can move only as fast as the slowest buffalo. When the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members.

In much the same way the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, we all know, kills brain cells, but naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers.

Sounds like the Cards aren't getting Fuentes.
QUOTE Newschannel 5 Sports has learned the Cardinals are very close to moving out of the Brian Fuentes sweepstakes.

A source told Frank Cusumano that the Cardinals felt they made an aggressive offer, and because of this long lull, are turning the page but not shutting the door on signing the 33 year old closer.

Not for nothin'...but, you could simply have called him a shitty, journeyman reliever.

By feeling the need to classify him as Japanese, you've highlighted that as being a reason he might be shitty.

I found it inappropriate.
