Tigers released OF/DH Gary Sheffield.
The club will eat all of the $14 million Sheffield is owed for 2009. The 40-year-old hit .225 with 19 home runs and 57 RBI in 114 games last season. If he was willing to play a part-time role, I'd drop Gathright and sign Sheff in a heartbeat. Between Alf and Bradley, you could probably get him 60-75 games and plenty of pinch-hitting appearances.

I don't think we need a veteran slugger. Between Johnson and Hollywood Hoff, we should be set to cover the inevitable fill ins for Alf and Bradley. While I'm not a huge fan of Gathright, he plays the part of the situational speedster that comes in handy. I'm not sure what hole Sheffield would fill.

A herd of buffalo can move only as fast as the slowest buffalo. When the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members.
In much the same way the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Sheffield used to be a great player. His career numbers are actually HOF numbers.
Now, however, he's on the wrong side of 40, is a terrible defender, has lost major bat speed according to scouts, and is the most notorious "clubhouse cancer" guy in all of MLB.
Indeed, the main reason the Tigers released him was because they feared his wrath and all-out bitching if he was put in a part-time role.
As stunning as this may sound coming from me, I'd rather have Gathright.
There's nothing better than to realize that the good things about youth don't end with youth itself. It's a matter of realizing that life can be renewed every day you get out of bed without baggage. It's tough to get there, but it's better than the dark thoughts. -Lance
