The Reds have claimed infielder/outfielder Arismendy Alcantara off waivers from the Athletics, Cincinnati announced. Fellow utility option Patrick Kivlehan who was claimed just eight days ago from the Padres was designated for assignment to clear roster space.


Alcantara, 24, was once one of the more well-regarded prospects in the Cubs minor league ranks, but his promising production at Double-A and Triple-A as a 21-year-old and 22-year-old, respectively, hasn't carried over to the big league level.

My suggestion? Let’s have second and third base represent the base of a vertical safe area, in which a player is safe once he touches the base and remains safe so long as a part of his body is in the area immediately above the base he’s sliding into. In other words, you initiate the safe zone by touching the base first, and then once you’ve touched it, the area of the base becomes an extension of the base itself, so if your body is momentarily over but not perfectly on the base, you’re still safe.

The rule needs adjusting because it's being applied, it requires runners to slide not better, but differently than they always have (sliding in a manner designed to break up a DP, notwithstanding).

I don't dislike it, but my point is that it doesn't solve every instance of the issue, particularly the feet-first slides that come off of the base. Why not just treat second and third base like we treat first base?

I don't feel strongly about this, but I liked the rule change that got rid of the neighborhood play and required fielders to touch the base, because that's what you're actually supposed to do.

 

You're actually supposed to hold the base.  So slide properly and hold the base.

 

(Unless there was an angle they didn't show on TV in game 2, I didn't see anything to convince me that Javy didn't hold the base.)
