If the Giants are really out of the Manny market, shouldn't they be looking at Abreu?

I think that would be a good fit, yeah. He'd be their best hitter, and they won't need many runs to win games.

I hate to steal Sipes' thunder, but the Giants are pretty close to achieving the goals we had for the Wood/Prior years.

They've built a great staff through the draft.

The situation is quite similar, only their SPs stay healthy, at least for now. They don't seem to know how to develop any decent position players either. If they get a decent hitter or two, they'll be dangerous.

Redding signs with Mets. Thank God.

Braves have offered Derek Lowe, might be more than the Mets offered. Also, I saw yesterday a random inclusion of the Cubs in a Derek Lowe thing. Wrote about it here.

He signed, 4/60.

So much for that option.

He was never a realistic option unless Dempster didn't re-sign anyway.

At least this probably takes the Braves out of the Peavy sweepstakes...if they were ever truly in it.

I don't believe the new Padres ownership group intends to deal Peavy anyway.

Prior signed with the Padres. If he pitches in the Majors this year, he gets $1 million.

If he gets to pitch in the Majors this year, I think he deserves the 1 million and a lollipop.

From what I read today, they wont take over until Feb. 2010 so I'm not giving up my small glimmer of hope that a deal can get done once the Cubs ownership gets settled.
A herd of buffalo can move only as fast as the slowest buffalo. When the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members.

In much the same way the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, we all know, kills brain cells, but naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers.

That sounds about right. All these predictions of SD transferring ownership in 3 months are loony at best.

Moorad's group is expected to have influence in personnel decisions by mid-season, but not sooner.

Yes but the entire reason the current owner wanted to cut payroll and thus deal Peavy was due to financial obligations stemming from a messy divorce. That all goes away with him now standing to make hundreds of millions on the sale of the team.

Obviously there is always a chance but it's far less likely he gets dealt now.
