MLB News & Notes (other than Cubs or Sox)
6 years and $206mil? That's insane, even with deferrals.

Appears that a little larger truckload of cash can change most players minds regarding the importance of winning

Sounds like the deferrals are minimal.  No final word, but it sounds like present value of the deal will be between $190-200M.

This is not some silly theory that's unsupported and deserves being mocked by photos of Xena.  [Image: ITgoyeg.png]

Depends on the length of time over which the cash deferrals will be discounted. Could be a big chunk of cash paid out over 15-20 years (higher discount rate = smaller NPV of payments) or something silly, making the net present value considerably smaller.

I read the deferrals are 60 million to be paid out within the first 5 years after the contract ends. The present day value is 190 million.

Heyman notes that all of the deferred money will be paid out in the first five years after his six-year contract. As we have seen now with Greinke and last winter with Max Scherzer's free agent contract with the Nationals, more teams may start opting to go the deferred money route to maintain more financial flexibility in the interim. Calculated by net present value, the total value of the deal equates to around $190 million.

Copied that from rotoworld.

He's been quoted as saying he'll play for the worst team, if they offer the most money.

Not with a 13.3% tax rate, he can't.

I don't believe the Samardzija rumors. I think only Cueto pulls down $100 million.

I know it's the market, but, Shark is not worth 18 million a year for 5 years.  It makes the Lackey deal look even better IMO.

Pleased that he didn't sign with Cards but Cards will rebuild rotation with other 2nd tiers who will exceed expectations

I think Shark could revitalize his career in that big ballpark, but a 5 year deal seems like too much of a risk IMO. The AAV seems high, but for a shorter deal it would make more sense. I bet the Cards sign Leake now, and the Dodgers go for Cueto.
