Yet the celebratory rim jobs are still mandatory.

Zach Wheeler goes down with torn elbow ligament. I bet they are glad they didn't trade Gee yet.

This rash of serious pitching injuries the last couple of years are no joke. Are we witnessing a growing problem that needs a sport-wide solution? If so, what?

As of July 2013 report, 1/3 of all the current MLB pitchers (at that point in time) had had Tommy John surgery. That's incredibly scary.

Honestly I have no idea what the solution would be. This has been an issue for almost 2 decades now. It can't be good for the sport long-term to lose some of its most exciting young players every season for extended periods of time.

Ah. yes, okay. I had heard of the theory that it starts young, due to year-round throwing. Hmm.

Honestly, I think the problem starts when these kids hit their teenage years. The really good players start playing year round on traveling teams and as far as I know, there are no rules governing pitch counts etc. Until rules are put in limiting how much and how often these kids pitch this will continue to be a problem.
Also, don't play year round! Their arm and body never get a chance to recover.

Limiting the types of pitches kids can throw early on is probably more important than how often they throw. I think strict pitch counts have largely been a failure thus far.

This large surge in injuries to young pitchers further supports the Cubs' drafting tendencies.
