MLB News & Notes (other than Cubs or Sox)
Do you mean ceiling? Cuz if Martin signs for more than $17/yr, I'd like to see him do so with another team.

I know, shocking right?

5 times the legal amount...yo. Granted I think that's lower there than it is here, but still would be .25 BAC I think.

Ah. Hmm. What do you think he might command? I suppose I'm being too optimistic about what it would take to sign him. I mean, am I crazy to think that there's no way he signs for anything close to McCann money (5/85)?

I'm thinking 5/75 would probably do it. Not sure if he's worth every penny, but I think if we have to overpay by $5 mil or so it isn't the end of the world.

And on that note, the Pirates just traded for Cervelli from the Yanks. Methinks they are moving on from Martin already.

I don't see how Victor Martinez's deal will effect Martin. They are not similar players. One derives his value with defense at a premium defensive position. The other is a DH the derives his value entirely with his bat.

Sounds like it, although I'd be a little surprised if they just hand Cervelli a starting job. He's just not very good.

Not so sure about that. OPS+ of 141 and 126 the last couple seasons but a lifetime mark of 97. Maybe he's figured something out? His defense is not on the same level as Martin, but he's 28, so it isn't a bad move for them.

You just quoted 2 seasons in which he was in and out of the lineup due to injuries with 61 and 162 plate appearances, respectively. Not sure that sample size is worth a lot. Granted, I was speaking from memory and his batting stats are far better than I thought... even at a career 97 OPS+. The thing that would concern me about him is that he has 785 plate appearances in 7 major league seasons.

Pirates also have Tony Sanchez at AAA. With Sanchez, Stewart, and Cervelli, it appears that the Pirates aren't going to pay Martin. Probably a wise move on their part...they can spend the money better elsewhere. This is where being a big-market team should be a competitive advantage for us.

Damn, so Stanton might be signing a 12 or 13 year deal with the Marlins. For about $320 million.
