I think Runnys point is that a 9-year contract--something the Cubs would have never done (I would like to think)--was only possible because the Tigers can assume Prince would play out the gimp years of that deal as DH, a "luxury" the Cubs don't have.

Detriot still revolves around the auto industry which I believe is having a banner year.



Plus, most owners don't purchase sports teams to make money. A sports team is, like the corporate jet, just extensions of the owner's ego. Illitch wants to win another World Series before he dies and this is his move.



My guess is that Tigers team salary for Detriot will come in around $125 - 130 MM for 2012 around what the Cubs spent last year.

Appears that Hendry is still well thought of in most baseball circles but he couldn't get it done when the Cubs acted as misers nor when they spent like drunken sailors. Have fun with the Yankees. Overall, I don't think Hendry was a bad GM - he made some good trades and some terrible free agent signings - but it was time for Jim and the Cubs to depart.



When we see Yankees giving out NTC like candy on all their deals, I'll believe that Jim is making a mark on their organization.

Hendry's impact will be obvious, because the only guys with full or limited NTCs on the Yankees right now are Kuroda. And Rodriguez. And Sabathia. And Texiera. And Burnett. And Jeter. And Rivera. And Swisher.



Or essentially every single major free agent the Yankees have signed (or re-signed) with the exception of Granderson, who signed his contract 5 years ago when he was only arbitration eligible.



Not a defense of Hendry. I just wish people would stop acting as if giving out a no trade clause was somehow unique to his tenure. It wasn't.
