I guess this is their reactionary consolation move after Scherzer rejected their 6yr / $144m offer.

They'll end up regretting this deal.

Ya think? The thing that makes it especially stupid is that Cabrera was still 2 years from FA. At least 5 years of this deal will be terrible. The Tigers are going to find themselves in bad shape when the owner dies (Ilitch is 85) and the new owner isn't willing to lose 20 million per season to win a World Series. They just got out from under Fielders albatross. Now they just got into another one.

Just about everything the Tigers have done this offseason starting with the Fister trade for, well, nothing, to this reactionary I don't know what, are just bad for baseball.

And that Fister trade was made for financial reasons. Basically a salary dump.

I'm guessing this all but assures Scherzer hits the open market. There's no way you can be paying 3 guys a total of about $70 m right?

This is not some silly theory that's unsupported and deserves being mocked by photos of Xena.  [Image: ITgoyeg.png]

In all seriousness, if you think $70M for 3 guys is nuts, the Dodgers are doubling it.  They have over $140M committed for 6 guys in 2015.  Oh, and they've got $3.75M more committed to those same 6 players in 2016 than in 2015, and then another $250K on top of that in 2017.

Wait'll they re-sign Hanley Ramirez too. There's another $20-25 million waiting to happen.

Here is a really interesting read on Cabrera's deal

Some men are born mediocre, some men achieve mediocrity, and some men have mediocrity thrust upon them.

Let me rephrase- there's no way DETROIT spends $70 m on 3 players. The Dodgers are nuts these days. Like Wolf of Wall Street spending.

I think their TV deal is up in a couple of years, and they want to make sure they have their superstars on board to show the exces that they can attract viewers.
