QUOTE SAN FERNANDO, Calif. (AP)—Former New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies star Lenny Dykstra was jailed Monday on grand theft auto and drug possession charges after being accused of using phony information to lease a car from a Southern California dealership.

Dykstra, 48, was charged with 25 misdemeanor and felony counts of grand theft auto, attempted grand theft auto, identity theft and other crimes, said Jane Robison, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office. He faces up to 12 years in state prison if convicted.

Dykstra was taken into custody during a hearing in San Fernando Superior Court on the new charges. He was jailed on $500,000 bail with a bail-review hearing set for Friday.

His accountant and a friend were charged in connection with the alleged auto theft but not with drug crimes, Robison said.

All three men are scheduled to be arraigned June 16.

Prosecutors contend that the three men tried to lease high-end cars from dealers this year by providing phony information and claiming credit through a phony business called Home Free Systems.

Two dealerships rejected the lease applications but a third allowed the men to drive off with three cars, according to a statement from the district attorney’s office.

Police who arrested Dykstra on April 14 found cocaine, Ecstasy and the synthetic human growth hormone Somatropin at his San Fernando Valley home, the statement said.

Robison said Dykstra had not obtained a lawyer to represent him in the case.

“Of course I’m not guilty,” Dykstra told the Daily News of New York on Monday. “The car got stolen alright—stolen by them. I don’t have it anymore. It’s gone like my computer, my phone, my clothes.”

That may be a reference to Dykstra’s financial woes.

He was always kind of a dickhead/ass kicker. I never did like that in a player.

You can't know how much I hated Dykstra as a player back in the day, when we were in the NL East and he was a Met. I hated the Mets then every bit as much as the Cardinals and he was the focal point for all of my hatred. Nails can go be somebody's bitch in prison.

He didn't bother me as much when he was a Philly, but I'm with you for the most part. Very few players annoyed me as much as he did when he was a Met. Also, I sort of miss hating the Mets as much as I once did. When Dykstra starting writing bullshit for financial blogs and pretending to be a hedge fund manager a few years ago, it reminded me of why I despised him so much. Fuck him right in the ass indeed.

Is that quote in reference to what I said I liked about Baez?
Anyway, needless to say, those guys are always great to have on your team, but if they play for a rival, they're roundly despised.

I would think that many would say Sosa, but that was really only after the great PED debate. Maybe after the corked bat thing as well.

I'm talking about the kind of guy that today, would be sporting Affliction tees, neck tats and still reeks of having been a jock bully since middle school. Like Harper...like Dykstra...like Pierzynski...

Who was the last Cub in that mold.

You know something...I can't think of one in the 42 years that I've been aware of the Cubs.
Reply
I couldn't come up with one either. The only two that came close (in my mind) would have been Sosa or Mitch Williams.

He was a paranoiac whack job but I wouldn't classify him as a pull-the-wings-off butterflies sociopath...who fancies himself as a Neitsche-ian Ubermensche.

Doesn't Z fit that mold to a tee? I know kid despises his ass, but most of us love the guy.

Aside from the on-the-field blow-ups, Z is generally seen as a likable dude around MLB. Plus, he's never worn an Ed Hardy shirt to my knowledge.
