Freddy Sanchez

I think DeRosa's bat plays very mediocre in right and very much above average at second. I like Fontenot only against right handers and for only 250-350 ab's. Sanchez is owed $10 million over the next two years and would be another second baseman that can not play short, which is about the last thing this team needs. I was in Pittsburgh all of last summer, and the fans there could not wait to get rid of Sanchez. Felipe Lopez can play short, and will in my opinion cost much less than Sanchez. I am much more worried about Theriot repeating his numbers from last year than I am with DeRosa or Fontenot.

I'm kinda worried about Theriots numbers dropping this year as well, that's why I was hoping we'd be in on the Furcal talks. But I haven't read anything that has us even mentioned.

We were mentioned a few weeks ago, but that has dropped off.

Yeah pcb, I think I was as high on Theriot as anyone last season and he way over performed what I even thought was possible. To me he just seems like someone destined to regress. With SD getting rid of Grenne it would seem to me that Cedeno is going to be involved in the Peavy trade or maybe Hendry will shock us all and trade Theriot. Either way we are going to have to have another shortstop on this team next year, and I really think that Lopez can bring as much to the table offensively as anyone out there.

I had no idea he was 30 already. I'm a little worried about Sanchez too, and not because of any injuries he's had.

Here we go with the Theriot crap again. You guys realized he's had about 2 bad months in his entire career, notably his .202 September in 07 when he ran out of gas right? He's a .290 career hitter and he realized what he was last season, it was no fluke. He stopped trying to be a little power hitter and just went with the pitch to right field and shortened his swing. If he hits under .295 this year, it will be a disappointment.

The problem with Theriot is that he slugs about what he posts as a BA. He's fine if we can stick him the 8-hole, he should not be near the top of the lineup though. IMO, his best attribute is that he's good at turning the lineup over from the 7 or 8 hole.

Oh, and I'd love to move him to 2B.

Clapp as long as he keeps his obp aroung .390 he will be fine. I am just worried about why people are not grooving pitches to a singles hitter that is always looking to go the other way. Last year was the highest obp he has ever put up as a professional as well.

Yeah I gotcha. But for his walks, there was a reason for the increase. He talked all season about how he knew his job was to just get in base for our boppers. He focused more on just doing whatever to get on base. After the success he had, I doubt he changes that approach.

You're right though, teams might as well just give him something to hit if he's only hitting singles, great point.

And one thing that I could never understand was why more teams didn't put a shift on him. Brenly mentioned that quite a bit too. Maybe more teams will do that this year.

I'm not sure that's a great idea because he can always drop a bunt down and make it to first with his slightly better then average speed.

The thing I don't get with him is why people don't pitch him inside. Maybe I don't remember and he did get pitches inside that he would fight off, but it seemed like all season long Theriot would get pitched outside and every time he would just lay it off into right field.

I'm not concerned about Theriot's bat in this lineup. He gets on base and that's what we need. I'm still worried about him defensively though. He has to be 100% perfect on everything he does in about half of the chances he gets at shortstop. I think he's handled things well so far, but to expect that is tough.

As Savant has mentioned, I think Lopez would be a nice player to bring in if Cedeno is traded. But, I would actually rather see an A+ glove added that can be slotted for late inning substitution at SS because of Theriot's defensive short comings.

You make a good point about him being able to bunt then. Still, they could play the shortstop more up the middle and move the 2nd baseman closer to 1st. It seems most of his hits were right between the 1st and 2nd baseman.
