This country has lost its nationalism. Every country wants to beat us, and we just let them. Why? Because nobody cares. I really don't get it. We should be excited about this. This mentality is more than just sports, it's happening all over.
Yes it could cause an injury, but that doesn't make it a frivolous event. This isn't a bunch of exhibition games they're taking time off for.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
It is pointless. This country is just fine, why be nationalistic about a contrived event when we already get to see the best baseball players play every single day? Of course every country wants to beats us, we're the best and home to the best league in the world. Why care about an event that has no history and the result doesn't matter? The Japanese won last time (I think), do you think the world thinks they're the best? No, winning a couple of exhibition games proves nothing. Why should we be excited about something that isn't even on par with the All Star game and isn't participated in by some of the best athletes in the sport? What mentality are you talking about? In a country with 3 of the world's best leagues (MLB, NFL, NBA), not to mention the best high school and collegiate programs in the world, there's very little to be excited about when a new set of glorified exhibition games comes along.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
The Super Bowl didn't have history when it started either. I'm not saying this is going to be huge like the World Cup or Super Bowl, but it can be something. To quote Matt Liston, you have to think of something and believe in it for it to happen or be created. We can make this big.
Of all of our big 3 leagues, baseball is the ONLY one that is truly international. Basketball is not there yet, its close, but not quite. Football will never be there. So since we have so many foreigners and we have a team that is full of foreign-born stars (3 of the "4 Aces" and all but 1 of our star players), how is it not exciting to see which country has the better players? Is Team USA really better? I'm not so sure.
Did Japan play better in 06 than anyone else? No, Korea got a bad break. But that isn't an argument not to have it. Do you really think the Giants were the best team in the NFL last year? NO. So does that make the Super Bowl meaningless? Of course not. If that's the case though, then we should have won the pennant, that sure happened. The 2001 Mariners did not win the WS, the best team doesn't always win.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
If the Olympics would not have dropped baseball, the WBC wouldn't have even been created. It was a replacement for something that didn't garner enough attention to continue. It's 2nd rate, an afterthought, completely irrelevant, and basically pointless and it always will be. Like every other good American, I could give a shit less if the thing continued.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
The Olympics had no attention because no one cares about seeing AA teams. Ok, I guess I'm a bad American then.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
No, Olympic Baseball had no attention because it's a glorified exhibition for sport that has it's best athletes and teams determined during a 162 game season followed by a World Series rather than during a 2 week series of meaningless games. Also, did Cuba send their B team? How about Japan? Korea? And yes, you're clearly a communist.

The whole thing. I was just waiting for someone to take up the argument after I saw the nationalism post.

I'm not sure which part of Uncle Sam's uniform I like most.

It's so American, it's hard to love the whole thing.

I don't necessarily agree with what CD2W is saying, but I'm glad he's making a solid argument. Glad to have you here CD. Keep up your argument. You'll soon realize that Ruby will argue passionately about anything.

Put me down for worrying about Marmol this season.

Ruby gets it.

Of all the positions, catcher and closer are the 2 positions that cause players to break down the most from wear-and-tear.
So seeing <i>both</i> Soto and Marmol signed up for this makes me sick.

To me and to a lot of international players out there, I think there is no greater pride than playing for your country. Every major international sport has a world cup. Look at the soccer world cup - Its the 2nd biggest sporting event outside of the olympics. Rugby - another huge event. I think its unreal and goes to show who is the best baseball nation in the world.

Put me down for enjoying seeing baseball regardless of the circumstance, but not at the risk of seeing any Cubs players have a chance at injury. Fuck Nationalism.
If Angelo had picked McClellin, I would have been expecting to hear by training camp that kid has stage 4 cancer, is actually 5'2" 142 lbs, is a chick who played in a 7 - 0 defensive scheme who only rotated in on downs which were 3 and 34 yds + so is not expecting to play a down in the NFL until the sex change is complete and she puts on another 100 lbs. + but this is Emery's first pick so he'll get a pass with a bit of questioning. - 1060Ivy

I'm 100% fine with this. I'm just glad there's an actual plan in place that isn't, "Let's load up on retreads and hope we get lucky." I'm a little tired of that plan.
