Cubs in WBC
#16
I guess I'm the only one that was a little surprised Lee would still be going. There has to be at least 2 better American 1st basement, right? Obvioulsy Mark Teixeira. If you're looking from an offensive standpoint, maybe Prince Fielder?

but thats just it. the players do think it's meaningful, and thats why they could get hurt. plus, an added series of games may come back to bite them late in the summer when players start getting tired.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

They could get hurt in ST to though. They could get hurt anytime they take the field.

They don't play near enough games in the WBC to where it actually wears the players down later in the season. I don't believe that for a second.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

i think the odds of players getting hurt in spring training are less. sure, it happens, but when players aren't playing balls out, not diving for balls they normally would, not pitching in pressure situations, not running balls out from base to base, theres a lot less chance of injury. just my opinion.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

You are probably right. However I just believe that they can get hurt anytime they take the field.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

they can get hurt just walking outside their house.

what bothers me is that some of our most important players are participating when they should be getting ready for the season. they're risking injury to participate in a meaningless series of games. i hate it.

they should be using amateurs or minor leaguers or college kids. it's not the games that bother me, it's the fact that important players are involved.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Amateurs, Prospects and College kids? That's why Olympic baseball sucked. No star players. Nothing to attract anyone. No one wants to see Josh Vitters facing Kei Igawa in the title game. No one would watch.

I love this tournament.
The team to watch is Canada, because they'll be overlooked. They're freaking loaded.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

thanks for the economy lesson. i'm well aware of why they want star players playing. i really don't give a shit if anyone watches. if soriano blows out his leg again, or dempster blows out his arm, or marmol takes a line drive off his face, ill be irate.

it's stupid to risk your star players for a series thats only motivated by revenue and nothing else.

oh, and fuck the canadien team. why would anyone give a shit?
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
It's not just money. I adds something new, it's another championship to win. Other than College Football, every sport in America has only 1 title per year. This is something new. It brings excitement and boosts morale.
As for injuries...what evidence is there from anyone getting a major injury last time? Other than Peavy crying that it hurt his numbers throughout the '06 season, I haven't heard anything.
I hate my pretentious sounding username too.

1. it IS money. plain and simple. it's money.
2. it buiilds excitement and morale for who?
3. what evidence is there that it won't happen this year? if you ran out in traffic a couple years ago and nothing happened, does that mean if you run out in traffic right now, nothing will happen again?

the wbc is stupid.

I think the WBC is pretty meaningful to most countries (other than us). I know at least Japan, Korea, DR, and others take it pretty seriously.

Just sayin'.

Yep, and that's why we will continue to get our asses kicked by less talented teams. It's how it was for the USA bball team for awhile until this year. Nobody here cares. It's a huge deal in those countries.

Other countires think the Olympics are big shit too, most Americans are like "Oh look, the Olympics are on" every 4 years. The WBC is pointless, it's like the Olympics, but even more useless.

This is not pointless at all. This country has lost its nationalism. Every country wants to beat us, and we just let them. Why? Because nobody cares. I really don't get it. We should be excited about this. This mentality is more than just sports, it's happening all over.
Yes it could cause an injury, but that doesn't make it a frivolous event. This isn't a bunch of exhibition games they're taking time off for.

It is pointless. This country is just fine, why be nationalistic about a contrived event when we already get to see the best baseball players play every single day? Of course every country wants to beats us, we're the best and home to the best league in the world. Why care about an event that has no history and the result doesn't matter? The Japanese won last time (I think), do you think the world thinks they're the best? No, winning a couple of exhibition games proves nothing. Why should we be excited about something that isn't even on par with the All Star game and isn't participated in by some of the best athletes in the sport? What mentality are you talking about? In a country with 3 of the world's best leagues (MLB, NFL, NBA), not to mention the best high school and collegiate programs in the world, there's very little to be excited about when a new set of glorified exhibition games comes along.

The Super Bowl didn't have history when it started either. I'm not saying this is going to be huge like the World Cup or Super Bowl, but it can be something. To quote Matt Liston, you have to think of something and believe in it for it to happen or be created. We can make this big.
Of all of our big 3 leagues, baseball is the ONLY one that is truly international. Basketball is not there yet, its close, but not quite. Football will never be there. So since we have so many foreigners and we have a team that is full of foreign-born stars (3 of the "4 Aces" and all but 1 of our star players), how is it not exciting to see which country has the better players? Is Team USA really better? I'm not so sure.
Did Japan play better in 06 than anyone else? No, Korea got a bad break. But that isn't an argument not to have it. Do you really think the Giants were the best team in the NFL last year? NO. So does that make the Super Bowl meaningless? Of course not. If that's the case though, then we should have won the pennant, that sure happened. The 2001 Mariners did not win the WS, the best team doesn't always win.

If the Olympics would not have dropped baseball, the WBC wouldn't have even been created. It was a replacement for something that didn't garner enough attention to continue.
