Cubs to sign OF Gathright
#16
I don't mind it as long as we're still getting a real RF.

I like it as long as he is just a pinch runner and never gets to bat.

I was about to post this, I was looking him up and found his car-jumping video.

Well, at least the guy has a talent.

You don't sign Gathright unless Pie/Fuk is on their way out, that's completely obvious.

But he hits like shit.

TUESDAY: The Cubs have signed Gathright to a one-year deal, according to Carrie Muskat. The Chicago Sun-Times says it's an $800K deal. The speedy outfielder has a career line of .263/.328/.304 in 1296 plate appearances. Perhaps the signing will lead to a trade of Felix Pie, who is out of options.

Why would we tie our hands like this UNLESS a deal for Pie was already agreed to?

I don't think we tied anything.

Yep, if we don't deal Pie, they will fight for a spot during Sprig Training, the better makes the team, the other one goes to the minors. No big deal.

Nope, we just gave ourselves more options. Gathright doesn't deserve to do anything other than occupy the late inning defensive replacement/pinch runner role that Pie had last season. If anything, I hope this pushes Pie in ST to fix his damn swing, and earn the starting role. It'll be interesting to see how it all pans out...

Pie's out of options and probably wouldn't clear waivers, if he doesn't make the team he's out.

They should just make the deal with Baltimore for Olsen. If we revisit the Peavy talks, we know SD wanted him. If not, we have more uses for a LHP than a no hitting OF'er (especially now that we have Gathright).
