Cubs to sign OF Gathright

Or we keep all of them. Fuk to platoon in CF. Pie as the 5th OFer. Gathright takes Ward's spot.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

But then what about Hoff? Our bench would be, assuming Pie is starting in CF, Fuk, Johnson, Gathright, Fontenot, Cedeno, Hill and Hoffpauir. We'd have to go with 10 pitchers instead of 11.

We have actually carried 12 pitchers almost the entire last 2 years.

Pie's not gonna be starting in CF(unless he hits about .800 in ST, shows a shorter swing, ability to hit the inside fastbal, ability to hit breaking balls, and more discipline), just sayin.

Ok, so Hill, Fontenot, and Cedeno are pretty much locks right? Hoffpauir still has options I assume, so that means between Fuk/Pie/Johnson/Gathright two have got to go, and considering Fuk's contract, it makes this situation pretty maddening because I'd love to ship him out of here before any of the other 3 go.

You mean like his 2009 option being declined at the end of the season?

Got that, but that was just to try to get him back at a reduced rate, no?

I can't believe people are talking about DFA'ing Fuk. I know someone pointed it out already, but this isn't football. We'd be on the hook.

I have to ask, am I the only one that holds out hope for Fuk? He started off last season good enough that I can't believe he's total crap. New year, platoon situation, it could be just what he needs.

If Fuk can make adjustments, he'll be fine. But he sure looked scarily like a Corey Patterson type who wasn't likely to make them. Doesn't matter if he's in a platoon or not, unless he stops that running out of the box before he completes his swing, even I think I could get him out.
I'm 100% fine with this. I'm just glad there's an actual plan in place that isn't, "Let's load up on retreads and hope we get lucky." I'm a little tired of that plan.

I would not at all be surprised to see Fukudome have a big year. He shows excellent plate discipline it just seemed that he got himself into a guessing game that made him late on fastballs and ahead of anything offspeed. It will be interesting to see what kind of a hitter he is going to decide to be when spring training gets here.

He lost his confidence and got away from what made him so good early in the season, going with the pitch to left field. The talent's there. I wouldn't be shocked if he figures it out again. I think he's much closer to a .280 hitter than a .260 hitter anyway.
