Milton Bradley and Cubs agree to deal?
The only reason why Hoff didn't make the postseason roster is because Ward got some big hits late in the season and he was a veteran.

Exactly the reasoning why Gathright was signed. He was a "veteran."

OK folks, put your money where your mouth is: anyone want to bet that Gathright plays more than 10 innings in RF, or that the scenario I mentioned earlier (the "Opposing pitcher's nirvana" lineup of Fuk moving over to RF, with Gathright in Center) gets more than 10 innings in 2009?

Anyone?

No, that's not the reason he was signed. He was signed him for his speed, as he's maybe the fastest player in all of baseball. They were looking for more team speed and rightfully so. His main role is going to be as a pinch runner.

No one ever said there wouldn't be a Gathright-Fukudome combo.
The thing you need to remember is that all Cardinals fans and all White Sox fans are very bad people. It's a fact that has been scientifically proven beyond a shadow of a doubt. Being a Cubs fan is the only path to rightousness and piousness. Cardinal and White Sox fans exist to be the dark, diabolical forces that oppose us. They are the yin to our yang, the Joker to our Batman, the demon to our angel, the insurgence to our freedom, the oil to our water, the club to our baby seal. Their happiness occurs only in direct conflict with everything that is pure and good in this world.

As usual, once the games start, I'll be rooting hard for Joey, Fuky and the whole gang.
Especially Milty. I like his fire.

Gathright has played 1 game in RF in his career.

Bradley can play RF.

Fukudome can play RF.

Johnson can play RF.

Hoffpauir can play RF.

Miles can play RF.

When Gathright gets PT, it will be in CF or LF or as pinch runner. It's really that simple.

Wait, so now we're changing the argument? More than 10 innings is tantamount to seeing lots of PT in RF? Shit, Gathright could play 200 innings in RF and he still wouldn't be seeing lots of PT out there. KB, you're a revisionist and your vision changes by the second.

Was it me who brought up the "10 innings in RF" thing?
No, I think not.

I don't buy the "may be the fastest player in baseball" talk... He's only got 78 stolen bases in 1145 Major League AB's, which took something like 400 games for him to amass.

Nope. I was simply refuting the statement, because it seems plainly wrong.

BTW, what is this argument even about? I'm lost.
Let's find the battle lines:
I think we all agree that we'd like to see Hoff make the team.
I think it's pretty obvious we'll need another infielder, and it's been a topic of discussion for over a month now on this very board.
And we have Gathright, who according to you guys, will spell Alf a couple times a month, and be our 3rd CFer. He's also fast (though probably not as fast as Pie was).

Like musical chairs, there are 2 seats, and 3 players: Hoff, JoeyG, and the utility/infielder guy.
Like all of us, I hope Fontenot kicks ass, and proves himself at 3B, a position he's never really played. And I hope that the Theriot-Miles-Font troika can handle the middle infield at a championship level all season long.

But, if there is any need for another infielder (a move which you've been campaigning for, rube), then either Hoff or Gathright has to go, correct? If my math is wrong, point it out to me.

So, what was the beef about again?

We need another IF, but we're not getting one. Gathright and Hoffpauir make the 25 man. The beef is that you constantly make posts that have no basis in reality.

Many people around the league say he is. Personally, I think Reyes or Taveras might be faster but it's close. This guy's been timed at 6.1 in the 60. Incredible speed does not= incredible base stealing though, it's an art. He's stolen at 74% and Lou is sure to send him a lot, but this guy will be a great weapon to put on 1st base for example after Aramis leads off with a walk in the 8th. He's ridiculously fast running the bases, like Pie was.
