They were looking for more team speed and rightfully so. His main role is going to be as a pinch runner.

Gathright has played 1 game in RF in his career.
Bradley can play RF. Fukudome can play RF. Johnson can play RF. Hoffpauir can play RF. Miles can play RF. When Gathright gets PT, it will be in CF or LF or as pinch runner. It's really that simple.

Let's find the battle lines: I think we all agree that we'd like to see Hoff make the team. I think it's pretty obvious we'll need another infielder, and it's been a topic of discussion for over a month now on this very board. And we have Gathright, who according to you guys, will spell Alf a couple times a month, and be our 3rd CFer. He's also fast (though probably not as fast as Pie was). Like musical chairs, there are 2 seats, and 3 players: Hoff, JoeyG, and the utility/infielder guy. Like all of us, I hope Fontenot kicks ass, and proves himself at 3B, a position he's never really played. And I hope that the Theriot-Miles-Font troika can handle the middle infield at a championship level all season long. But, if there is any need for another infielder (a move which you've been campaigning for, rube), then either Hoff or Gathright has to go, correct? If my math is wrong, point it out to me. So, what was the beef about again?

Personally, I think Reyes or Taveras might be faster but it's close. This guy's been timed at 6.1 in the 60. Incredible speed does not= incredible base stealing though, it's an art. He's stolen at 74% and Lou is sure to send him a lot, but this guy will be a great weapon to put on 1st base for example after Aramis leads off with a walk in the 8th. He's ridiculously fast running the bases, like Pie was.
