This isn't a very logical reason, but here goes. Last night's start aside, and he actually looked better than the 3 ER would indicate, Peavy's been very very good against the Dodgers over his career. He even handled Manny last night. That could come in handy if we square off against them in the playoffs again. Anyway, I still want him.

I've never heard the expression, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say it means something along the lines of "make it up".

He looked pretty shaky early on actually which is when he gave up 3 of the 4 runs.. by about the 4th he settled down and looked as dominant as ever outside of the monster HR to Kemp.. He allowed an unearned run but it was his fault, making a throwing error on a pickup attempt.

One thing that was mentioned that I wasn't aware of was he had the lowest home ERA in baseball last year. Something like 1.70 at Petco.. Pretty drastic home/road splits.. However one thing that would bode well should be become a Cub.. He also had the best daytime ERA in baseball.

He's still filthy though. Last night was the first time he'd lost to the Dodgers since 2003. A span of 13 starts.

The signs were all there. Unfortunately, Z has displayed those same signs.
Obviously pitchers can turn things around quickly, especially elite ones. Health, though, is the great equalizer.

I don't get where all this Z stuff is coming from. He had one rough outing. Take that game out and he's done this:

19 IP, 19 H, 7 ER, 8 BB, 20 K

He's striking guys out at the highest rate of his career, something that people were concerned about the last couple years. He's going to win 15 games and have an ERA under 4. I'll take that.

As for Peavy, I've said his stuff didn't look nearly as good last to me last year in the starts I saw, and he was blah away from Petco. I'd love to have him, especially since I couldn't give a rat's ass about really any of our prospects at this point where we're in win now mode. However, I don't think he'd be better than our #3 or #4. I don't think he's the ace anymore that people are making him out to be. Still, he's an innings eater and solid.

I was a little worried about Z last year. Take out his no-hitter, and he basically sucked for a couple months.
I suppose I always expect Z to take the next step, and become a Cy-caliber pitcher. Those are high expectations.

Yeah, I agree. I think he is what he is though and it's certainly not a problem. I don't know if he'll ever be that dominating ace, but 15 wins or so, a sub 4 ERA, 200+ innings, and a nice bat as well every year. It's like Aramis. They're both capable of bigger and better things and obviously we're greedy and would like to see that, but they're still damn good and do it every single year, so it's hard to complain too much.

BT - His team is 10-8 with a 43mm payroll and under 30mm in obligations for 2010. Why should he not be proud?

Unless he is forced by ownership to dump Peavy later, and he is forced (by the market and by JPs NTC) to take less than they feel he is worth, he should be proud that he held his ground and didn't take it in the shorts and give up the (expected) best player on his team.

Now hindsight is 20/20 and JP has a near 6.00 ERA, but nobody was projecting that when they were talking about acquiring him, and I doubt anyone expects that to continue over the course of his 30+ starts.
