You've gotta give up something like Vitters to get a pitcher of Peavy's caliber. I'd give up Vitters and whatever else in a heartbeat and do jumping jacks to get Peavy. We're not playing for 2012.

I would like to keep Vitters also, but I also understand we would have to give him up to get Peavy. However, I am with KB in the thought that we should wait to see if we even need him. Marshall could do a great job as our number 5 and then we could keep our prospects.

I'd take Peavy without waiting to see how Marshall does because I think it's extremely unlikely Harden is re-signed after this year.

It could pay off with the idea in mind that if Marshall does well and we don't "need" Peavy, the Padres don't have as much leverage. Plus, if Marshall is performing the way he has in spring training, the Padres may decide he could be the centerpiece of a trade rather than Vitters (although it's debatable who's worth more to the Cubs if Marshall is pitching to the tune of a 1.93 ERA early on).

Yep. That train of thought resonates with me very much. How many seasons like 2008 have we had where very few players, especially our SP, disappoint? I think it would be great to have Peavy, especially if one of more of our aces comes up limp or underachieves, or both. This season isn't going to be a cakewalk as some have implied.

Playing in the NL West and in Petco Park, why would you not rebuild around Peavy, unless you believe he is going to be a mediocre pitcher. I think the risk of another team picking him up is a lot less than him being worth about half his contract.

Because they can't afford him and can rebuild faster by spinning him off for 3-4 good prospects, while also clearing payroll for other needs.

Yeah that's why I said that.

They were talking about this on MLB Network the other night and they speculated that San Diego won't deal him right away because of the potential impact on ticket sales but that it's almost a foregone conclusion Peavy and Giles will be dealt at some point..

It's also been widely speculated by the various talking heads that Halladay will be dealt this summer as the Blue Jays feel the economic crunch. Personally I'd greatly prefer Halladay over Peavy...
