Nevermind that he was a consensus top 10 pick that year. You really like to make shit up.

Some people thought he had a chance to go number 1 that year if not for a knee injury (that the Cubs (correctly) believed he would recover from).

The next 9 picks after Harvey have all made it to the majors by now.
Here are some 1st rounders that Jim passed up that year for his alma-mater boy, Harvey:
Nick Markakis, Chad Cordero, Brandon Wood, Chad Billingsley, Carlos Quentin, Adam Jones...a few fellows we could use, correct?

Isn't Jim's "strength" supposedly his scouting skill?

I know the draft is an inexact science. Save me the spiel. I also know that for a long time, the Cubs have sucked at it.

I could speculate as to reasons (O's were the only team really interested in Pie, and they didn't want Olson either), but I don't really know.

Hell, it could be because Hendry had approached the M's about Heilman (that part's a certainty), and the M's said they wanted Olson from the O's. Shit if I know how these things go down.

I dunno, I find it hard to believe that Pie had fallen so hard as to only be able to net Garrett Olsen. I also find it hard to believe that the Mariners held out for Garrett Olsen when/if we asked for Aaron Heilman.

Yes, this stuff about Pie falling so low that he's worthless on the trade market is just bullshit. About 95% of the writers, bloggers, and TV talking-heads liked that trade for the Orioles, and Pie is projected to be the O's starting LFer in 2009.

Pie was going to be our #3 CF with nowhere to go. He's not ready to play in the big leagues and may never be. He's going to start on the Orioles, a complete shithouse of a baseball team. On a team with championship aspirations, he should be nowhere near the starting roster.

I think Pie will end up being a major league player, he is just going to require some time to figure out how to hit in the majors, the Cubs are not in a position to be developing hitters in the majors.

I dunno, I find it hard to believe that Pie had fallen so hard as to only be able to net Garrett Olsen. I also find it hard to believe that the Mariners held out for Garrett Olsen when/if we asked for Aaron Heilman.

Kb, did you steal my post?

I think Pie will become a major league centerfielder. His bat does not at all play in left. He is going to require time to develop as a hitter in the bigs, the Cubs are not in a position to develop hitters at this time.

Right. It wasn't going to work here. If we had a World Series say in the last century or so, I might feel differently about these sort of moves. We need to win now. Pie wasn't going to help that this year, and odds are he wouldn't be next year either after rotting on our bench.

If we were paying a lot for Gathwright I would agree. But, I am afraid that a year of Pie getting limited ab's would have driven his value around the league down to nothing while he failed in a part time role.
