<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->On topic, I think we can get peavy, but if the Padres try to hold us up, they can go fuck.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Either that or they just decide to keep him.
Then what?
I'm just thinking out loud here but, I say sign Ben Sheets for 2 years+ an option year(10-12 mill per).If Ricketts has approved a higher payroll for 2010 and beyond in order to go after Peavy, the money will be there. Plus it wont cost the few valuable prospects we do have.But...the injury history of Sheets really worries me. Is Sheets a type B?
I dont know what to think.
A herd of buffalo can move only as fast as the slowest buffalo. When the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members.
In much the same way the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, we all know, kills brain cells, but naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers.

Did the Brewers even offer Sheets arbitration?

I haven't been around here for a bit, but am I the only one who is really concerned that Peavy suffered some sort of elbow issue last year and has been smacked around 2 out of the last 3 years away from Petco?

Yes. At the rate his offseason is going, he probably should have accepted.

Well...he's put up a 4+ ERA on the road in 2 of the last 3 seasons.
I hate him already.
And I don't see how there can be little concern about his injury last year. This is a guy who has put a lot of innings on his arm.

It wold be one thing to be signing him as a free agent, but to be giving up everything the Padres seem to be asking for seems ridiculous to me. I am with Cap on the sign Sheets noise.

i'll take a possible injury risk with peavy over a guaranteed injury risk with sheets. if the peavy thing falls through, i'd give sheets a shot, but only for one year.

I'm sort of in that boat too. My only point was that it seems a lot of people are gung-ho to give up a lot of our tradeable commodities (if not all of them) on a guy who has a couple of red flags that are going largely undiscussed.

I keep thinking we are owed a young stud cy young pitcher to make up for Himes criminal stupidity in letting 31 go to Atlanta, but then I remember that we are the Cubs and it scares the shit out of me. I will be okay with Peavy if it is just one of Marshall or Vitters, and the rest of our minor league system.

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->With a payroll that exceeds the nearest in the division by $40 mill, I could probably put together a couple division winners, too. Just sayin'.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
So what's the magic payroll number that you have to be below to actually get credit for a 97 win team?

The Mets have had the highest payroll in the NL for the past 5 years or so and have failed to win anything. What's their excuse?

An unbelievably obtuse GM who, among many other faults, refuses to acknowledge the concept of a "bullpen," and who only signs Latino ballplayers.
And even with all that, they finished in 1st place with 97 wins a couple years ago, coming within a run or so of going to the Series.
