I was looking at what the Cubs have done in the draft and it started to really sink in just how poorly the team has drafted over the years. Considering that, if I remember correctly, roughly 30% of all 1st round players end up eventually in the Majors, we suck!

Here are the Cubs first round draft picks for the past 15 years.

2008 - Andrew Cashner
2007 - Josh Vitters, Josh Donaldson
2006 - Tyler Colvin
2005 - Mark Pawelek
2004 - No 1st round picks
2003 - Ryan Harvey
2002 - Bobby Brownlie, Luke Haggerty, Chadd Blasko, Mathew Clanton
2001 - Mark Prior
2000 - Luis Montanez
1999 - Ben Christianson
1998 - Corey Patterson

Thanks Fella, I couldn't remember the stat and obviously I was way off.

The 2000's have been particularly bad. I'm wondering if this is our scouting, our development, bad luck or all 3. Regardless, we haven't had a 1st rounder make it since Prior. This drafting is almost forcing us to use free agency and trades to create the team.

He's still in the organization, he just hasn't done shit since his injury. My theory, he learned how to suck his own dick so he has no motivation to earn the big buck so he can get other people to sick his dick for him.

There is no defending the fact that the Cubs have done a pretty miserable job drafting the past few years, but pretty much EVERY team has a first round draft pick list like this. Also, bear in mind, that chart is including supplemental first rounders, which are essentially high second round picks.

For instance, the Braves seem to have a pretty good organization. Since drafting Chipper Jones, they have selected 2 guys who were any good (Francour, Wainwright), with 13 first round picks.

Then there are drafts like 2000, when there were exactly three players taken after Montenez, who made any impact at the major league level at all (Baldelli, Utley, Wainwright).

I'm not saying the Cubs have been good, as they clearly haven't. It's just that lists like this always make it seem worse than it really is.

1995 - 19 of 30, 12 on MLB roster. 1995 Draft.
1996 - 22 of 35, 12 on MLB roster.
1997 - 31 of 52, 20 on MLB roster.
1998 - 30 of 43, 21 on MLB roster.
1999 - 23 of 51, 19 on MLB roster.
2000 - 23 of 40, 19 on MLB roster.
2001 - 25 of 44, 22 on MLB roster.
2002 - 25 of 41, 24 on MLB roster.
2003 - 25 of 37, 24 on MLB roster.
2004 - 24 of 41, 24 on MLB roster.
2005 - 23 of 48, 23 on MLB roster.
2006 - 14 of 44, 14 on MLB roster.
2007 - 4 of 64, 4 on MLB roster.
2008 - 1 of 46, 1 on MLB roster.

I'm going to remove 2006-2008, because most haven't made it to the major's yet.

Otherwise, it's 297/496 or 60%. The Cubs have had 4 (Wood, Garland, Patterson & Prior) of 14 in that time for 29%.
This doesn't take into account the quality of the player, but it does say that either we draft poorly or our farm system doesn't do a very good job of developing these players.
