Pitchers And Catchers Report

Salt in the wounds, Vine.
I predict the first Miles homer will come by...August?
There's nothing better than to realize that the good things about youth don't end with youth itself. It's a matter of realizing that life can be renewed every day you get out of bed without baggage. It's tough to get there, but it's better than the dark thoughts. -Lance

He has 1 career game at 3B and only 41 at SS. I really hope there's someone else in the plans.

we don't exactly have a backup SS either.

QUOTE Third baseman Luis Rivas, a natural shortstop, impressed Piniella Wednesday with his defense and could be in good position to challenge Hoffpauir for the last roster spot if neither Mike Fontenot or Aaron Miles plays well defensively at third.

"I'll just come here and play my best baseball," Rivas said. "Whether it's third base, shortstop or wherever, I'm going to work hard to do whatever they want."

QUOTE MESA, Ariz. — Despite starting Wednesday's opener, Jeff Samardzija is likely to begin the season in the Cubs bullpen, assuming he pitches well and Sean Marshall holds onto the fifth rotation spot that is all but promised to him.

The possibility Samardzija will start the season in the rotation at Triple-A Iowa is also an option, and it's one that clearly doesn't appeal to the former Notre Dame star.

"Patience probably isn't one of my virtues," Samardzija said. "But I'm working on it."

Now in his third spring training, and with some major-league experience under his belt, Samardzija finally is feeling at home. All the hype is gone, and he no longer is confronted with daily questions on whether he regrets giving up a possible career as a wide receiver in the NFL.

Competing for a job in the majors is the only focus of Samardzija this spring, and the comfort level after last year's success is definitely making things easier.

"It's nice," Samardzija said. "You can go out there and take a deep breath and instead of feeling you need to impress the world, you work on the things you need to work on."

Samardzija allowed two runs in his two-inning stint Wednesday in a 5-3 victory over Los Angeles. He almost got out of a bases-loaded jam in the second with a comebacker that resulted in a 1-2-3 double play. But Samardzija then walked the next hitter and gave up a two-run single.

"Actually, I felt a little bit better the second inning," he said. "It's kind of funny how that works. You make some decent pitches and get out of an inning 1-2-3, and then you make some good pitches and give up a couple of runs."

Manager Lou Piniella was concerned only about building up arm strength and throwing strikes.

"What I've seen of Jeff, when his split-finger is good and he's throwing it over the plate and the hitter is aware of that pitch, he's much more effective," he said. "But that's a pitch that sometimes comes a little later in the spring. You need some good arm strength to throw that pitch, so we're going to have to be patient with it.

"But he competes. That's one thing you like about the kid. He competes and he comes at you."
Despite what Sullivan says, I think Shark's going to be in Iowa as a starter out of Spring Training.

The intelligent move is to give Shark a half-season or so as a SP in AAA.
Who gives a damn whether he's fond of the move or not?

For being a natural shortstop, he's played a grand total of 40 games there in his career, with 8 errors in those 40 games.

He should be challenging Gathright, if anyone, for his roster spot, by the way.

Maybe, maybe not. I could argue that the intelligent move is to let him be a lights out relief pitcher like he was last year. At least then he'd be helping the big league club.

QUOTE The Los Angeles Daily News reports that the Dodgers have signed Doug Mientkiewicz to a minor league contract.

Mientkiewicz hit .277/.374/.379 for the Pirates last season while seeing extensive action at third base for the first time, but won't be more than a bench bat for the Dodgers. He's a solid pickup and provides nice depth.

Here's a move the Cubs should have made.

Sorry tom, you're right. But, there was an article about DeRo today in which it was heavily implied that the only reason he was traded was because Lou didn't jibe with him, personality-wise.

This makes me want to kick Lou in the balls, but it really makes me want to kick Hendry there, for not just saying "Suck it up, you pussy. He was your MVP last year."
Instead, the supreme manager-enabler in all MLB once again shows his stripes.

Damn, that blows, if the article was true. I was not aware of that.

But what's done is done.
