Why is that a bad thing? Fontenot killed the ball last year and Miles was a .300 hitter. As long as they play average to good defensively I really don't see it as a big deal. Miles is the same kind of hitter that Theriot is.

He'll be fine. He's making 2 effing million dollars and can play multiple positions. I think he'll specifically be a nice addition for the playoffs. Dude beat up a guy holding a gun. He's a tough son of a bitch. He's also not one of these all or nothing power hitters like most of our guys have ended up being, he consistently makes contact and will make things happen. We have enough power, we need a couple Theriot's in the lineup.
People that choose to watch the games and see the value he brings to the team will love him. People that just look at his overall stats probably won't.

I wasn't knocking anybody or anything, I'm just saying you'll appreciate him if you watch him on a daily basis but he's not going to light up the stat sheet so some won't appreciate him as much. Like I said, I'm hoping for the best. Fukudome plays fundamentally sound baseball, and I think he plays as hard as he can. I'm not sure I'm all that crazy about him, though. Good fundamentals and playing your ass off are nice, but it doesn't really make up for lack of talent.
I'm approaching Miles with an open mind. He's a Cub, and I hope he succeeds. I also hope he doesn't get anywhere near 400 ABs, as Lou implied.

If the guy hits .290+, that will be plenty enough talent though. He might end up being among the league leaders in batting average even, we're not talking about a scrub here. He'll offer a lot of things that will help us win games. Plus I could see a spike in his on-base percentage, it was the case for most everybody on our team last year and they're clearly placing an emphasis on that. Miles isn't a selfish player so I could definitely see him improving there.

So it's not true that there's players out there that are more valuable than their stats over a whole season indicate them to be?
Miles can play just about anywhere, he'll get 1-2 hits a game, he gives Lou versatility for hit and runs, he's a switch-hitter and although it doesn't seem like a big deal to some people it's a big deal to most opposing managers, he'll play his ass off, take out guys on double plays, make contact consistently, etc. He'll do things each game to help us win each game that don't all show up in the box score. Whereas Alf for example going to go into his stretch where he's the best player on the planet for a month, but then can't hit water if he fell off boat the next, you know what you're getting with this guy every single day. He's going to be a very valuable part of this team.
