He's not close to Miles as a hitter actually, but he's a helluva shortstop and I think he'd make an easier transition to other positions than most.

Miles was a .317 hitter last year and hit over .290 the year before that . Crosby hasn't had an OBP over .300 since 2006. Shit, Miles had a higher slugging percentage the last 3 years. Who cares though? It's a backup infielder. Look around the league, they're all like this. Again, the Phillies just won a world series with Eric Bruntlett playing a ton of games. The Rays went there with Akinori Iwamura and Jason Bartlett as their starting middle infielders.

I agree it doesn't matter if you're talking about the virtues of Aaron Miles versus Bobby Crosby.

But we're not.

We're talking about Crosby on the bench versus a guy like Hoffpauir or Koskie on the bench. And I think that could make a big difference.

Well I know how you feel about Gathright too - you want him playing most days in CF? Because that's what would happen if we didn't have Fuk around.

Sure he's a ripoff at that salary but hopefully he turns it around a bit this year and I think he will - hopefully something around .270/.370/.400 which isn't great but it's better than the alternatives we've got at this point.

Keep in mind that Bill James, PECOTA, and all the other projections are all 100% based on math. So they're basing Fuk's numbers on how he did in Japan (where he kicked ass), and his <i>total</i> numbers from last year.

If a Japanese import pitcher goes 10-1 in his first half season, then goes 1-10 in the second half (and looks absolutely terrible doing it), would you project him as a .500 pitcher again the following year?

I've seen a couple of the sabre guys talking about how it takes japenese players 2-3 years to put up there projected numbers in the states after leaving japan. But, for the most part they do eventually meet those projections. It was obvious fuk was lost last year, and if he had swung the bat like that in japan he would have never put up the numbers he had in the past. I don't think he will be as good as he was in april and may, but I think he will be much better than he was in the second half. I really want to see how he does in the wbc.
