I think you're right, but if we had a viable lefty & he could be optioned, he'd already be in Iowa.
This is not some silly theory that's unsupported and deserves being mocked by photos of Xena.

Yeah. I don't think there is any doubt. He really does not belong here.

Kind of angered me to see the Padres report that Gaudin was throwing wicked gas during a recent session with them. Of course, maybe they're just saying that so that their fans don't revolt.

Managers base so many of there decisions on righty-lefty matchups (whether they should is another story), so having the ability to force the other manager's hand is important.

Quite often, bringing in a left hander is done in order to make the opposing manager burn a right handed pinch hitter, or to turn around a switch hitter who might be better from the left side. Of course it's important to get lefties out, but it's not the ONLY thing. Having a crappy Gaudin instead of a crappy Cotts completely ties Lou's hands. <!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--> Tell that to Marmol and Heilman who have come in to fix Cotts' messes almost every time. <!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--> Cotts has put out a Heilman-induced fire himself though, just sayin'. <!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--> I know, but the vast majority have been the other way around. All I'm saying is that the idea of forcing a manager's hand only works as a strength if you have the players to make it work. Sure, I'd like to have a lefty in the pen, but I'd rather have someone who isn't completely useless. Cotts has been just that for years now. At least Gaudin was good until he hurt himself.

As for Vizcaino, I think he has been fine, he has only had 3 appearances I think, but he hasn't given up anything. I wish Lou would use him a little more rather than running Cotts out there so often and using Heilman and Marmol every single game.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd--> Totally agree. I can't believe Cotts is going to be on this team much longer if he can't throw strikes. The only reason I can fathom of why he is still here is that we really don't have anyone to bring up from the minors. We may be forced to put Marshall back in the pen before to long. <!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--> 2 reasons Cotts is still on the team: 1. No really viable lefties to call up 2. Out of options <!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--> Yeah, I get that, but as I'm sure you already know, if the Cubs brass would use their brains, neither reason would matter. Cotts is not good at getting lefties out, so him being a lefty really shouldn't matter and he shouldn't ever be back so having an option to keep him at AAA means nothing to me either. <!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--> What you guys seem to be forgetting is that the ability to get left handers out is only PART of the equation. Quite often, bringing in a left hander is done in order to make the opposing manager burn a right handed pinch hitter, or to turn around a switch hitter who might be better from the left side. Of course it's important to get lefties out, but it's not the ONLY thing. If the argument is "I'd rather have a really good right hander in the pen than Cotts", then I'm fine with that. But considering EVERY guy in the bullpen has sucked ass at some point (with the possible exception of Vizcaino), that doesn't seem to be the case.
And let's be fair. Gaudin was a complete catastrophe this spring. So I'm not sure I'm on board with "Let's get rid of our only lefty, and take a chance on the guy with a double digit spring ERA getting much better" train.
I wish that I believed in Fate. I wish I didn't sleep so late. I used to be carried in the arms of cheerleaders.

Cotts has shown me nothing thus far. He can't throw strikes (I don't remember the last time he actually threw a single strike, maybe 3 outings ago) and has been a complete waste of a roster spot. In a stronger bullpen, maybe you could afford to have a waste of breath like Cotts, but as is when you also have Patton and Vizcaino, Cotts is a liability, and you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who could perform worse.
And my comment about Gaudin was never intended as an actual defense of him, and moreso that Cotts is completely useless as a Loogy or otherwise.

Meanwhile - the guy we traded Cotts for (Aardsma) is doing pretty well in Seattle. I understand, different time different place, blah blah. Just an irrelevant tidbit.
