Samardzija kinda sucks.

Papelbon interests me. He's old, but since he's been moved to starter he's been great. And he's left handed. A great philosopher once said that lefties develop later than righties.

Nice to see Starlin continuing his success at AA, while only being 19.

And in 64 AB at AA, he's got 8 walks and only 3 K.

Bibens-Dirkx is on fire. It seems like every start he pitches deep into the game. I'd like to see what he can do at the next level.

Colvin has been hot, batting .500 in his last 10 games. At Tenn he is hitting .305/.345/.514 w/ 11 HR in only 259 ABs. His strike out numbers have improved a little but are still his #1 problem. He has 46K/16BB. This is a repeat of AA for him so I'm not sure how this projects. He turns 24 in a couple of weeks. I think he'll end up as a 4th or 5th OFer on a major league roster one day.

Rebel has some pretty impressive numbers although he is 23 in A ball. He's hit .305/.354/.468 with 15 HR and 89 RBI.

I'm kind of curious what the Cub's organizational standpoint is on a guy like Rebel; should he be on the roster at this point? Like all of us, I'm happy to see him hit with authority, but I wonder if the organization has a certain age where they give up on a guy. (mind you, I'm all in favor of giving our young guys every chance, but a 23 year old guy still in A ball is never going to see Wrigley Field, and he's taking playing time away from a possible prospect.).

I hope this doesn't sound dickish; it wasn't meant to. But baseball is usually kind of a meritocracy, and at some point, you have to do what's best for the team.
There's nothing better than to realize that the good things about youth don't end with youth itself. It's a matter of realizing that life can be renewed every day you get out of bed without baggage. It's tough to get there, but it's better than the dark thoughts. -Lance

This is only Rebel's first full season of pro ball after 3 seasons at OK St. . He was drafted in the 25th round, so he makes next to nothing. I don't think he's blocking any younger 1B prospects, and he makes Peoria a little bit better. I see no problem with the situation.

The only guys that he's really blocking is John Contreras and Jericho Jones and they're both fringe prospects. I agree that there's a point that you have to drop your dead weight, but I personally believe you have to give anyone under the age of 24 a chance to develop before outright dropping him. If he would have produced like he did last year, I would be all for giving him the heave ho next year. Now that he has produced pretty well at A ball this year, I think that's enough of a reason to keep him around until he starts struggling.

I think the Cubs are of the same train of thought. Look at guys like Theriot, Fox, and Wells. Sometimes guys just take a certain amount of time to develop. IMO, age is kinda arbitrary (kinda). Look at Brian Dopirak for crying out loud (we'll see if he can play with the big boys soon I'm sure).

My point is pretty similar to Coldneck's though. He's producing no matter what age he is, he's cheap, and he's not in anyone's way. No reason to let him go at this point.

If Dopirak ends up making anything out of himself for the Blue Jays or another team, I will hate his guts forever.

Jericho Jones got a big signing bonus just last year, didn't he? I think the Cubs think he's a prospect...

Regarding Jones, I was just never too impressed by the lines he put up at XST this year. He's 22 years old at this point and it would have been really helpful if he was producing at A+ ball this year.

Which brings me to my next point, he's not even being blocked by Rebel, he's hurdled Rebel There's hope for Jones, but I haven't been dazzled by what he's done in pro ball so far (and I'm probably short changing him given he hasn't finished his first full year). I have to admit though, hitting 6 triples in 159 ABs in rookie ball is pretty impressive, especially for a guy his size.

I don't know how you guys can care about these minor leaguers. None of them will amount to dick.

Why?

Cause we're the Cubs? Cause we have the minor league curse? What's the reasoning here? What possible reason do you think our minor leaguers won't develop?
