I can get behind that . . . then I can cross my fingers that the Fox/Hoffpauir platoon will be able to replace Lee adequately. That'd be one thing that I'd love to be wrong about.

He's ready to go already. Have you seen Fox play first base?

I saw him play some 1B in Mesa. He wasn't impressive. But 1B is at the far end of the defensive spectrum (SS and C at the other). It's nice to have a GG at 1B, but I'd rather have someone who can hit. I'm not saying Fox or Hoffpauir are going to be great hitter MLB players. Maybe not even good. But Lee has been trending downward for quite a while now. He might be done.

Just because I don't think they can replace Lee, doesn't mean I'm against seeing what could happen on a limited basis. A trial run, if you will.

His numbers don't show it, but I feel like the last four or five days he was starting to look much better. He hit the ball on the screws numerous times but only had a few line outs to show for it. I don't know that he'll ever be an All-Star again, but I think it's incredibly premature to say things like "we're better off without him".
The thing you need to remember is that all Cardinals fans and all White Sox fans are very bad people. It's a fact that has been scientifically proven beyond a shadow of a doubt. Being a Cubs fan is the only path to rightousness and piousness. Cardinal and White Sox fans exist to be the dark, diabolical forces that oppose us. They are the yin to our yang, the Joker to our Batman, the demon to our angel, the insurgence to our freedom, the oil to our water, the club to our baby seal. Their happiness occurs only in direct conflict with everything that is pure and good in this world.

His struggles predate his slow start this season. He hit .266/.343/.390 in the second half of 2008. The BA and OBP aren't terrible (pretty average, really). But the SLG is awful.

I understand that, but that was because the only time he ever pulled the ball was when he rolled over on an outside pitch twice a game. He's been much better so far at pulling the ball with authority, which is why I'm not too bothered by the start.

This is not some silly theory that's unsupported and deserves being mocked by photos of Xena.

Yeah, and his stats look quite a bit better if the howling wind didn't hold up that flyball that ended up being dropped by Dickerson that would be on Waveland usually, and the double he hit off the wall in his last bat went 2 feet higher. Like you, I won't predict he can put up All-Star type numbers again but think he'll have a fine season. He's definitely turning on the ball more with authority like you were saying and driving the ball in the air. He's also yet to hit into a DP which is nice.

Haha. I love it. Everyone should have to pick one of the three pitchers received for DeRosa. I would also go with Archer if forced.
Haven't heard much about Stevens or Gaub.

Neyer doesn't agree with me or others as per Fox:
<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->Garrett Hawk, Nashville, TN: The Cubs are getting nothing out of Derrek Lee, and Jake Fox (AAA 1st baseman) is currently the hottest hitter in the entire minor leagues. I don't think Fox is going to have a long, productive career, but as a quick fix, shouldn't the Cubs go with the hot hand?
Rob Neyer: Not unless there's something physically wrong with Lee.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
There's nothing better than to realize that the good things about youth don't end with youth itself. It's a matter of realizing that life can be renewed every day you get out of bed without baggage. It's tough to get there, but it's better than the dark thoughts. -Lance
